What else is essential? I know Brian Eno is the quite the originator, but where to start with him?

Edit: Sorry if there was a thread for this already

I second the recommendation for Global Communication's 76:14. GREAT album. In terms of ambient Eno, I'd say just start at the beginning. Discreet Music and Music For Airports are wonderful. Ambient 4 is also a great album and is considered one of the first dark ambient albums (though, I'm sure some would argue some early avant/industrial recordings might take that distinction). Shuttle 358 is a killer ambient artist...especially Optimal.LP and Frame. L'usine/Lusine/Lusine Icl is extremely talented, with albums ranging from ambient techno, to trip-hop, to pop. I'm biased towards his first album (self-titled - L'usine), which is in my top 5 albums ever. Monolake makes some great minimal techno that borders on ambient. Tim Hecker, Alva Noto, and Ryoji Ikeda are all bizarre, subtle, and rewarding. Hope that helps.

Inade
Predominance
Gnadentod
ENDURA
Radio Eichenlaub
Antlers Mulm

Old releases on Loki are essential, start there for real dark ambient...

Lustmord's The Place Where The Black Stars Hang is one of the best Dark Ambient albums in my opinion. It's the ultimate 'deep dark space' type of atmosphere and sound.

Thanks for mentioning this, I gave it a listen and it sounds very very good

On a similar note, does anyone know of any (other) Ambient albums that use similar sounds as Burzum's Tomhet and Rundgang... tracks? I know most people hate these tracks, but I could listen to those sounds for hours.

Edit: Please no East Euro crap like Perunwit

You should try Marblebog's "Wind Of Moors" album. Burzum-like ambient that's ace.

I love those tracks. Those who don't like them must have ADD or some dumb rockist synthphobia attitude.

I really like this super-dynamic stuff, you probably haven't heard of it, called 'Skrillex'...
