"Sentient" is the appropriately sci-fi title of the debut album from Nucleus. Hailing from Chicago, Nucleus play a twisted and bizarre strain of death metal influenced by progressive death innovators such as Atheist, as well as under-appreciated bands that were too weird to gain mainstream traction in their own time - innovators such as Timeghoul and Demilich. The unique lyrics on "Sentient" also steer away from the usual death metal topics and instead seem to have space-traveled here from the headier dimensions of Isaac Asimov, Arthur Clarke and Frank Herbert.

Fittingly, given the unusual content and warped riffing, cover art for this album was painted by the master Dan Seagrave. The resulting piece is some of his wildest and most colorful artwork ever.

"Sentient" by Nucleus is coming out April 15th on CD from Unspeakable Axe Records. You can pre-order in mid-March from the web shop or on Bandcamp.

EDIT: Me Saco Un Ojo will release the LP version of this album, and Unspeakable Axe will stock an exclusive color.

I like it, a very solid recording with that unmistakable early 90's Florida sound to it! Did not hear that much weirdness in it, I think that perhaps something like Resurrection or Monstrosity would be a better reference.

Everyone's getting their wish. Cavernous death metal is on the way out. I mean Incantation is back on Relapse. Soon it'll be noodly tech shit everywhere you look until that subgenre reaches critical mass, stagnates and we start all over again. For now, it's nice though. Still excited to check this out.

The "Futuristic/Space metal" thing is already going on, look at half of the tech death scene.

It's definitely unique sounding (which is all that really matters, I personally don't care about lyrics), not just some noodily copy-paste tech death band.

That's more of what I'm getting at. A lot of that brutal tech death stuff has always been science fiction themed but it always seemed to be a bit thrown together to me. Random words out of a technology manual or something like that. I'm looking forwards to something a bit more focused like this and Terminus, regardless of subgenre.

I know what you mean - word salad metal. The lyrics here are more like sci fi short stories, I think. Some are inspired by particular books and authors.
