I think I've only once got a free record that is actually rare:

Usually best deals have been through trade instead of money. I guess best deal moneywise was Watain debut LP for 15 euros, but that was after the second LP had been released, so it wasn't that expensive yet. I do recall I bought Satyricon boxset for 100 euros, but trade it away later. Also got Northern Heritage 7" boxset for 100 euros few times, but not sure if that's a cheap price of it anymore.

Whilst on holidays in Wales with my family in 1996 I found Deathcrush posercorpse in a really oldmans type of second hand store for £3. My mate who was with us got Aske and Burzum for £5 together. This was before everything went mad in metal record collecting circles and before everyone with a record collection to sell could browse ebay to see the value of them. I didn't even know what i'd gotten at that stage. just another mayhem record to me. no inserts though sadly.

a couple of years ago I got first two Beherit and Grotesque MLP for free off a guy in work. other than that, I've had a few good deals and a few bad ones, mostly it's all evened out and I'm happy enough. I think the days of finding stiuff like Deathcrush or Aske in second hand stores for £5 are gone thanks to the internet.

I once bought Denial of Gods Horrors of Satan 2LP from Earache through ebay. Received a first press Bolt Thrower ...For Victory LP and Scorns Evanescence 2LP. Sold the Scorn for more than I paid for the DoG LP so I ended up with a 1st press ...For victory record and 5 euros extra. Quite a bargain I'd say.
