Just thinking about some decent songs that would only be decent without minor adjustments by genius guitarists.

Was listening to Kyuss - Phototropic and the tiny 3 second riff Homme throws in at 4:05 is beyond genius and pulls so much out of a few notes.

Any other examples?

God so many I'll have to come back to this thread but immediately thought about the harmonic flairs Gelal throws in riffs sometimes. My favorite example might be in that super sick doomy riff in Fecal Parturition. Huge love/respect for that shit

The ending of "Bombenhagel" by Sodom—how it ends with the German national anthem. I don't know if it's genius, but it's awesome, it's ballsy, and I love it. It's also the kind of thing most nowadays band would never dream of doing because they take themselves way too fucking serious and aren't even a tithe as cool as Sodom used to be.

I guess the things I really find genius are little bridges linking sections, maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree in this thread! But 2 in particular that I've always thought showed songwriting genius are Judas Priest in the song Stained Class (here) and Immolation in No Jesus No Beast (here), although that whole song is a complete masterpiece

And totally agree about Gelal in GBK. One of many great little touches is the harmonic lead in to the riff in Hobo of Aramaic Tongues. Pretty much the only guitarist (along with Immolation and early Incantation) that use harmonics tastefully to my ears

Gelal is always class with his harmonic flairs. And that sodom song is one of my favs.

Just cuz I'm a raving fanboy I'll jock Colour Haze more. The lead at 2:36 in "Reefer" is stuff of fucking legends.

That one little guitar thing in the middle of "In Coffles They Were Led".

that one riff in "the Fire to conquer the World" on the first Ketzer album was a quick flash of riff-genious in an otherwise mediocre song on a mediocre album by a mediocre band

The short melodic bit somewhere towards the middle or end of Kataxu's Roots Thunder. Only appears once for a few seconds and then never returns. I'm like come baaack...

There's also this short twisting riff that only acts as a transition between riffs on Kvist's Stupet. Quite a mighty way to move on.

Ved Buens Ende's demo track The Plunderer has a malicious tremolo picked riff that lashes you a few times and then goes home.

Oh, Arghoslent's Of Spears And Horns has a short lead riff towards the end of the song that hits such triumphant notes. You know the one.

The unusual riffing (especially for its time) in the beginning of Key to the Gate by Burzum.

The middle section of Pagan Winter.

The little solo that opens Sabbath's Wheels of Confusion and Vol 4. It's like preparing to something grand that will come after.

The crushing riff that comes after the intro in The Exorcist by Possessed.

In general 'Battles In the North' and 'Seven Churches' as whole are chock full of those little manic sections that make the albums.

Tony Iommi is a master when it comes to this shit. Ending riffs on Into The Void are short but amazingly heavy and catchy.
