Watched Combat Shock and Deadbeat at Dawn thanks to this thread..

I really fucking enjoyed watching these, so many awkward cinematic and acting moments/lines which are just fun to watch, but great movies nonetheless(especially Combat Shock). Can't recommend these enough and need more stuff like this! Suggestions?

In this order:

Final Wars is kind of a mixed bag. While it's got a TON of awesome Kaiju battles the non-Kaiju stuff is REALLY ridiculous at times. I definitely dig it though due to the massive quantity of Kaiju. If you haven't seen them check out Kitamura's "Midnight Meat Train" and "No One Lives."

The best for me will always be the original Gojira and NOT the US version with Raymond Burr added. The US version lessened the non-nuclear message and turned it into more of a standard monster movie. My wife gave me the Criterion bluray for xmas and I watched it yesterday, it's the version to own for sure,

After that I like the Heisei series the best, solid serious stories and the tasteful use of CG (mostly for breath/beam weapons and never for the Kaiju themselves) makes them more visually appealing. This series consists of the following:

- The Return of Godzilla (1984) (avoid the "Godzilla 1985" version with extensive cuts and Raymond Burr added in)
- Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989)
- Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991)
- Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992)
- Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993)
- Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994)
- Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995)

Everything else is still worth watching (and owning in my case) but be warned of excessive silliness in some, particularly King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla's Revenge and Godzilla vs. Megalon.

With all Godzilla movies I prefer the subtitled Japanese versions as the English dubbing is horrible for the most part.

The Heisei era Gamera films are also great, they are available super cheap on bluray as a 3 pack too:

- Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995)
- Gamera 2: Attack of Legion (1996) (best of the bunch and one of the best Kaiju movies ever)
- Gamera 3: Awakening of Irys (1999)

Rush (2013 Ron Howard film) - Simply brilliant based on real life drama, even if one has no interest in F1 it's still great. The best sports film ever as far as I am concerned.

12 Years a Slave - A free New York black man is abducted, sold into slavery and forced to deal with it for 12 years. Tough to watch at times but outstanding.

Gojira - Got the Criterion bluray for xmas, the BEST of all Godzilla films and the best treatment of the film I have ever seen.

Am I the only one on this forum that fucking can't stand that geeky shit "star wars" even though I've seen the movies, can't seem to enjoy it. I rather watch Star Trek if it came down to it.

Question

I loved the first three when I was a kid. The only one that still holds up for me is "The Empire Strikes Back."

The original Star Wars movies are masterworks.

Tough to reason how someone that is posting on a metal message board is complaining about star wars being "geeky".....ok. Its one thing if you don't like them, but don't hate on it because of the fandom/mass marketing it spawned.

Not complaining, just wanted to see if people had the same opinions as me. For that matter, I've met few people outside this forum who could agree w me. I guess they do indeed have a huge fanbase and didn't mean to pin point anyone out. No hate here mate.

Didn't even know Midnight Meat Train was his until yesterday. I have only seen the earlier films Versus, Azumi, etc.

A lot of people don't, probably due to the films not being Japanese, hence me pointing them out Smile
