"The Lighthouse" by Robert Eggars does look very good from the preview stills, I need to check out The Witch.

Dafoe is also in Siberia by Abel Ferrara which should be out this year, I want to see that as well.

Stephen King's The Night Flyer - An HBO Miguel Ferrer vehicle that feels like the best episode of Tales From the Crypt. The plot revolves around a tabloid reporter (Ferrer) who is tracking an airplane flying vampire.

I've said it before (possibly even in this thread) but the vampire's design is probably my favorite vamp design of all time.

It's pretty wild.

I watched the HBO documentary "I Love You, Now Die : The Commonwealth vs. Michell Carter" last night. It's about the famous case where a teenager killed himself and his girlfriend was encouraging through text messages.

Like the best crime docs (but is this a crime...?) it changed my opinion on this case from "fuck that bitch" to realizing these were two really fucked up kids on all kinds of SSRI's which are well known to fuck your brain up, especially developing ones. And the legal question as to whether or not this is a crime is good one to ponder. Both "sides" are given equal time. Definitely worth a watch, even if you're not that interested in the case or have the near universal knee-jerk reaction that she's an evil little bitch. Definitely a lot of gray in here, both in what happened, and the legal aspects of it and the precedent it set.

I’m very familiar with the case, had no idea there was a doc, thank you! I have mixed feelings on it, free will vs coercion situation. Though I think she is a real shit person, I dont think she should be charged. Just a personal add-on here, when I was younger a classmate had killed himself. A teacher made some wild accusations that my classmates/friends and I were somehow responsible as she perceived us to be bullies. However I barely knew of this kid, even though I knew some folks who did pick on him. I’ve always maintained that kid had other things going on in his life that caused/mounted to his suicide. Just like in this case, i think evil girlfriend was tip of the iceberg and poor dude had mental health problems prior to their relationship. Ultimately she may have told him what he wanted to hear. Very sad either way, two lives ruined by that tragedy, and even more loss for the families involved.

Damn dude, that's really fucked up that your teacher tried to pin it on you!

As for this case, it's hard to explain what was going on with these two without you seeing the documentary (it's a two-parter) For a long time she was telling him to get help and trying to counsel him... but it eventually got to the point where she seemed fully convinced that she was "helping" him. She was EXTREMELY fucked up and lonely, and so needy that she had no real friends because they couldn't deal with her neediness... so she met this dude and clung on to him and basically wanted to do anything to appease him.

Not excusing what she did, but she was very fucked up on anti-depressants, had extreme insecurities and seemed to live in a fantasy world. It definitely changed my opinion of the case, but not in a definitive way one way or the other. Just left me with the impression that there were two really fucked up people which led to disaster. I think if they'd never met, the dude would still have killed himself (he attempted many times before) eventually, and she'd still be a really fucked up, lonely person.

Lemme know what you think. Just saw the other day that her lawyers are appealing her conviction to the Supreme Court. It'd be real interesting if they take up the case.

Familiar with the case and followed it a bit. And in MY opinion, the HBO doc DOES seem like it's trying to give you reasons NOT to hate this girl. Because more people than not, DO hate this girl and think she should have been punished MUCH more harshly. And yes, he simply could have NOT listened to her and told her to fuck off, but he manipulated and coerced.
I see it as , yeah, they were both fucked up. But he had one foot in the casket and one on a banana peel and she gave him a push. But again, just my 2˘.

Seconded on the gratitude for the recommendation. Most thought provoking documentary I’ve seen in a while. The morbid part of me wishes that they’d gone deeper into Michelle’s background/family life. Definitely one that’s going to stay with me for a while

Yeah, that's the one thing missing. But I guess it makes sense that her and her family didn't participate in it considering it was being made during the trial, and they are still making appeals. So all we get to form a picture of her is the texts basically.
