|
|
Just played my copy of Leprosy, first time in years to be honest, and noticed it was going up and down like a carnival ride. What causes this? Is it storage? Heat? I'm guessing theres no way to rectify it and since it doesn't seem to affect the quality of the record, it's no big deal. Still, though kinda a niggling annoyance. Will have to start playing all my old lps to see which ones are affected in the same way _________________

My beloved clear orange Siege (drop dead) record spun like a Pringles (TM) potato chip when I first bought it. It was sandwiched in between the middle of some LP's for a few months and when I pulled it out to play one day, it was as smooth as butter. We don't have a lot of temp. variation and the area is dry. I dunno.... |

Pressure and heat would be the most logical assumption to the warping.
What is the safest way when your record shelf is partially empty, as in the safest angle with storage of records, with them laying against each other leaned to the one side ? |

| I try to keep them as vertical as possible, regardless. |

it will make them smell old and evil
but no, unless youre smoking 2 packs a day and exhaling everytime right onto the record.. youre safe.. aside from the smell. _________________ format your doormat |

| I've dealt with collections from the homes of heavy smokers where the smoke has left residue on the vinyl and the jackets smelled like ashtrays. Disgusting. |

Always keep records vertical, and snuggled with each other, but not tight stuffed. Because some gatefold jackets are poorly made and cup on the inside, they can bend your record where the cupping occurs.
When my cubical is not full, I use books to fill up and keep the records on vertical. _________________ http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Flight-Of-Sleipnir/267879219900772 |

haha i just dont see how it could leave a residue on the actual record unless it's been sitting on the player out in the open for a month of heavy smoking. ive actually worked in bars (when smoking was allowed) and the film on the ceiling was cleaned off after a year and it wasnt that thick.. and thats with multiple people smoking for hours on end for days on end. im going to do an experiment where i hang up a record and blow all my weed smoke on it for a couple of months, ill do comparison recordings before and after.
anyone ever bought an old record and found coke residue on it? got a copy of VOLUME 4 that had a definitely coke thumbprint on the edge.. i suppose he couldve be baking.. but i did taste it and it was coke. _________________ format your doormat |

I found Ride the Lighting with definite coke abuse.
Who knows, from time to time i'll get in records where the smoke damage is so heavy not only is the sleeve dense with stink, so is the vinyl. In more rare extreme cases they have a hazy film over them. |

yeh i guess its not that much of a stretch to imagine a dude in the 70s chain smoking, staring at and listening to his skynard LP over and over with the ashtray right next to the player etc etc. haha. _________________ format your doormat |
