Show no mercy and kill em all were both albums that had a specific sound that neither bands kept after that. Ride the lightning took a drastic change in sound as well as Hell awaits.. even the haunting the chapel ep was way different.

So both albums stick out as well Cool

I bought a Metallica bootleg DLP a few years back which turned out to be one live show (with Mustaine) and the second one with Lars doing an interview where he laughs a bunch about kicking Mustaine out and how they were all afraid he would kick their asses. He mentions Slayer too and said something like "Hah, yeah Slayer, those guys used to play Judas Priest covers until they saw us until they stole our idea of playing fast". Metallica used to play a lot of covers live early on too, but more unknown NOBHM stuff that people didn't recognize. From what I have heard about the late 70's early 80's scene, unless you had an album out you were expected to do a lot of covers or they wouldn't book you. I am sure Metallica's speed did have a big influence on, but I thought it was was absurd, and egomaniacly awesome, for Lars to dis them primarily for stealing their tempo

Good post! I think the fact that Metallica got "there" quicker as regards the harder sound was thanks to Mustaine too. There's obvious differences before and after he stepped in. whatever though, both albums are fucking top notch!

Show No Mercy is the best album there is or has ever been, regardless of genre or band. Perfection.

SNM came out in December of 1983, so made it in the year by a hair. Metal Massacre 3 was earlier in the year.

Great videos from that era of Tom Araya doing SCORPIONS "Black Out", MOTLEY CRUE "Looks That Kill", JUDAS PRIEST "Breakin The Law" and DIO "Rainbow In The Dark", which SLAYER were doing along with DEF LEPPARD, DEEP PURPLE, VENOM and METALLICA covers etc during the same period:

Great songs that never made it past being played live but further prove that SNM era SLAYER is the purest Metal in existence:

Wow thanks.

Those old videos are amazing!

Probably Kill em All, but comparing these two records seems a bit.. silly imho.. they seem to me like totally different bands overall.

Can't listen to "Seek and Destroy" anymore, though.

well they already celebrated with a 25 year blood red vinyl reissue a few years back.... another reissue.... Laughing at best, maybe we can hope for a tour where they play SNM in its entirety as they sorta did in 2006 with reign in blood for its 20th

yeah I don't know that I can really back the looks that kill cover... seems odd since slayer should have already been up and running as solid unit with an album on its way at that point (shout at the devil and SNM again both coming out the same year) why do covers of complete inferior shit hair metal? motley crue fucking sucks.

these unused songs are definitely cool, but I think I understand why they didnt end up using them... they all dont quite sound like "slayer" if you get what I mean there... cool shit, but feels like slayer still evolving out of judas priest/venom type covers...

Show No Mercy. A lot more evil record, and I like my thrash evil. Nothing wrong with Kill 'Em All though. Still, I do prefer Ride the Lightning to Kill 'Em All. The best and last good Metallica album.
