None of those bands ever released anything remotely comparable to the late '80ies/early '90ies in terms of quality. They're decent enough for that period mainly because of the lack of serious contenders, seen as all the big bands had either wimped out or disbanded.
I should add, Gehenna's Malice is by far the best (black) metal album from that period. |
Admittedly (and obviously) the early 90's was a much more prolific time for quality black metal to be made. I would, however, definitely rate the output of the bands mentioned as far above "decent enough for that period". Some of these albums are simply amazing and far above most stuff from "the before time". _________________

| I think the OP wants the thread to be about symphonic keyboard BM kitsch/nostalgia, not about what was good in general in the late 90ies. |

Those are very good indeed, with a Grieghallen production on top they are late second wave gems. _________________ Geißel des Fleisches - Bis aufs Blut gequält |

Why it wouldn't be? Despite maybe weird mixing it still has amazing songs. _________________

It's not horrible or anything, but sounds watered down compared to debut. What's more important, I think this album should take the main responsibility for the aidsfest of the shitty-keyboard-pink-black metal, while not being horrible itself starting (unintentionally but still) horrible trend.
Kind of like people blame Pantera post CoH/Sepultura Roots for being influential upon the nu metal crap, although in this case the originator albums suck shit imo too. |
