The first two Aeternus albums belong to this period too, and they're INCREDIBLE (imho, at least...)
Synths and castles are a weird thing. I personally love them but I think it's really a matter of whether the production and sound of particular albums manage to create an atmosphere that grabs you. I just find it an interesting evolution of black metal and I never listen to it with the same ear or using the same criteria as with my early 90's BM. |

YES! Definitively underrated these days. A shame how boring they became afterwards. |

Just recently bought this Old Man's Child vinyl box at a record fare. Has all their albums except Vermin and the very last. Quite a good bargain with only 25 Euro for a 5 LP Box and also some decent music.
One has to like symphonic bm though ... _________________

A couple of albums/bands from this era no one has mentioned yet:
Aura Noir - Dreams Like Deserts, Black Thrash Attack
Dark Funeral - Secrets of The Black Arts
Dawn - Slaughtersun
Dimmu Borgir - Stormblåst
Dødheimsgård - Kronet Til Konge, Monumental Possessions, Satanic Art
Setherial - Nord
Basically all the stuff released on Hot Records, Malicious and Necropolis. |

It's interesting to see how Emperor went from being praised as the absolute pinnacle of the genre, to basically losing all respect. |

I think Diabolical Masquerade belong to this thread too.

Come on, they didn't and numerous threads praising everything pre-Anthems on here show that. |

Synth stuff?
Kvist - For Kunsten Maa Vi Evig Vike
Manes - Under ein Blodraud Maane
Troll - Drep de kristne
The first two mentioned is probably some of my fav albums from Norway overall. _________________ Wantlist:

Dødheimsgård's Satanic Art and everything by SUMMONING (one of the best "goosebump metal" bands ever). |

The old fans will obviously still keep them in high regard, but you'd have to admit that their albums don't hold up nearly as well today as many others from the second wave do. The symphonic sound they pioneered has to some extend become a stigma for them. Just like Slaughter of The Soul is held responsible for spawning a whole generation of shitty Metalcore/Melodeath bands. In The Nightside Eclipse was in a similar way the most influental album for this much loathed third wave, and thus the Emperor influence was the first thing to be expelled when Black Metal made a comeback in the early 00s.
