I´ve been purposely NOT posting about this guy for a while, since he doesn´t fit the BM / DM / Thrash / Goat cult theme.

Anyway, after posts about Scorps, UFO, Thin Lizzy and other bands of that hard rock ilk, I dare ask, do any of you frost bitten warriors of the taint rate this guy as ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME like I do?

For me, hard rock / proto metal / whatever ya wanna call it doesn´t get much better than the first 4 MSG records.

There have been some disastrous turns but in general this guy remains one of my top probably 3 players, capable of escalating a kick ass jam into the fucking stratosphere. Like mindblowingly so.

So fuck me for asking but do you know what I am talking about?

He's a fantastic guitarist. I still occasionally have stretches where nothing but MSG/UFO gets played for like two weeks.

love me some MSG. However I prefer UFO force it and lights out for more heavy Tequila Nights.

MSG, great albums from the 80's but for some reason never listen to them any more.
Have a great memory of seeing them when they were NOT at their peak, in 1990 or 1991 I think, I remember the time so well because they played 150 miles from where I lived, but I drove there and back on the night before a major final exam I needed to pass in college. My lab partner was even more of a MSG nut but refused to go because he figured it would fuck with his ability to pass the test. I said, "fuck it", if I don't know the subject already, what will a little extra sleep help. haha.

I prefer him in UFO, to be honest, but some of the later albums are good.

Have never heard any MSG but love him in UFO, the solo in Time On My Hands is one of my favourites from him:

I have UFO- Phenomenon, Strangers in the Night, and MSG - Assault Attack. It's good stuff, but a notch below my favorites (Uli-era Scorpions, Rainbow, etc)

I've always wanted to check out UFO, but never knew where to start. What's a good album to start with?

their best album is FLYING, pre Schenker. Some insane space rock jams on that masterpiece.

The Michael Schenker Group
One Night At Budokan
MSG
Assault Attack
Rock Will Never Die

These are all essential albums to me, the rest I'm not interested in.
With one exception that is, The Michael Schenker Group ‎– Walk The Stage - The Official Bootleg Box Set, I don't have but I'm going to get one day.

I agree with you regarding FLYING, but really early and later UFO (like Eric Bell vs. "Nightlife" and on THIN LIZZY) are two separate bands, one an experimental early 70s heavy and spacey band, and the later 70s incarnation beginning to head into modern heavy metal.

OP, check out "Flying", but also check out "No Heavy Petting" or "Strangers In The Night" too. Those later records are in the vein of later 70s THIN LIZZY, JUDAS PRIEST, or MOTORHEAD - innovating modern heavy metal with great solos, double bass drumming, etc.

I was raised on mostly Schenker and Hendrix, had the chance to see Schenker with my dad in a mid-sized club the last time he came through Seattle a couple years ago or so. It was awesome, sounded pretty damn good.
