I'm personally a sucker for most stuff from this era but am running out of bands to look into. I may have made a thread of this some time ago or some others might have, but I've lost track of it. So aside from the big names that everyone already knows, are there any other more obscure albums from that classic era in Norway? I'll list some at least less-known things I'm familiar with:

Obtained Enslavement
Trelldom
Malignant Eternal
Fimbulwinter
Dismal Euphony
Morgul
Ancient
Strid

I guess I'm looking for a bit more stuff that's not on the top-tier lists we all know, but where there's still some quality to be salvaged, and before delving into utterly obscure demo-only bands.

Thanks for any direction!

I would have to browse the ol' shelves a bit to remind myself of these but I think Perished's Kark is quite a good album. Has a little bit of that kvisty spirit.

Kind of a guilty pleasure for me, fruity as hell and not even 100% black metal, but definitely an accurate time machine back to 1997:

Maybe check out the first two Enthral albums? No clue how they hold up to be honest, but I remember liking them both back in my formative years.

Early Manes, Thorns demos, first 3 Gehenna, first 3 Ragnarok, Zyklon B, early Troll, Urgehal, Ghaalskagg, Stormfront, Odium, Tartaros, early Old Man`s Child,....actually i think all norwegian bands from that period are more or less "known" - or lets call it easy: "demystified", hm.

Isvind's Dark Waters Stir as mentioned before. One of the finest releases of the Norwegian era, very overlooked. And Strid obviously. Surprised to see no one has mention Kvist.

Agreed, though, that most Norwegian bands of that era are rather well known.

Darkwoods my Betrothed put out a few good albums in the nineties, particularly "Heirs of the Northstar". The clean "vocals" on "Autumn Roars Thunder" are hilarious, but charming in their own right.

Edit: Didnt notice NORWEGIAN in the title originally, Darkwoods is Finnish. Either way, enjoyable stuff from the period.

Sleeping giant or not, that album has since its unsung days definitely leveled up to one of the all time Norwegian greats. Probably because I won't shut up about it.
