Obviously both bands first records are Metal classics, essential part of EVERYONEs collections. But just wondering how Metallica always got the title of the originators of the whole Thrash/speed sound when Exciter where there are the very same time, if not before them. I was watching Get Thrashed last night and you had Kirk Hammett and others from the Bay Area saying that until Metallica showed up, no one was playing like that, they were the first etc. HMM was only released a month earlier (June) than KEA (July 83) but Exciters WWIII demo was recorded in 1981! In my opinion HMM is more "brutal" than KEA too and defintely closer to what later became Thrash/Speed Metal than the more Heavy Metal orientated KEA.
Admitedly I've only ever heard pretty bad quality recordings of that demo so a lot of the rawness I THINK is there seems lost but I find it hard to believe sometimes that people in the scene back then (never mind the journalists in various magazines) seem to have not noticed Exciter up in Canada doing this stuff at the same time if not earlier.
Errm, sorry, don't want to be overthinking all this stuff and these records are so great that really I'm just splitting hairs for the sake of a thread, but that's what happens when you're sick at home for three days with nothing to do

I'd say Metallica was the first band to play 100% thrash.
They were better than exciter and Lars had the tape trading connections so their demos hit the entire underground like a hammer. |

This is correct !

I am biased probably, as EXCITER used to play gigs with ANVIL and RIOT, a few years before Metallica were gigging.
Many still do not call early EXCITER thrash metal, and I can only accept the first 3 albums being called "Power Metal" (or speed metal), if today's so-called "power metal" be properly classified as what it really is and that is just heavy metal (or dog crap).
Here is an interview, UK radio, from the cancelled 1984 tour (The Rods / Exciter / Metallica) I wanted to badly hear again and searched for like 15 years, off the Metallica ''Fucking Nuts'' DBL-LP bootleg, that someone finally uploaded and you guys just have to click.
Lars and Dan say (I think it's here) that Motorhead's speed inspired both of their bands.

Thanks for sharing that interview. Lars seemed a little "ermm" when asked about his opinion on Exciter. Seems he rarely had a good word to say about any of his contemporaries back then hehe _________________

Obviously Metallica wasn't the first... But they perfected it before anyone.
Anyways. Hail Exciter!

What Metallica had before anyone else was the heavy crunchy down-picking. _________________ http://www.dissectionforum.dk/ |

A huge influence for sure, but not half as heavy as Kill 'Em All. It's just a marginal today, but back then the difference was HUGE. Took a long time to get to Death Metal. _________________ http://www.dissectionforum.dk/

Venom and Discharge
Also, interesting thing:
http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Stress/9657
| Quote: | | In fact their early start has led bassist/vocalist Roosevelt "Bala" to object against the traditional view that Metallica was the first thrash metal band, claiming that Stress "is the true creator of the style because they played as fast and heavy as Metallica in "Kill 'em All", besides being older, and they have released an album before ("Stress" was released in 1982, while "Kill 'em All" was released in 1983)." |
