Yes! Although I could almost swear the Celtic Cross edition has a marginally better production especially on the guitars. Could be my imagination too. But those songs are so full of drama and heartache, no wonder I fell instantly in love with that album in '98. Obviously it has matured well.
Pretty hard to rank the entire classic Ryan brothers/early Allender era, but all the material they put together between 1992 and 1996 is damn golden. I still think that the definitive 90s Cradle Of Filth sound started with Vempire, but the debut is no less a prime example of blackened death metal. When didn't English rock music rule?
I would have loved to hear more (metal) from Stuart Anstis. He had an album's worth of material just waiting, but apparently tensions between him and Dani Filth were too much to handle. Not to mention Les Smith left at the same time as some kind of protest or something. Fucking shame. That must have been the beginning of the end more or less... |
I think you might be right. They went from being this super conceptualized band with a very high sense of aesthetics, to producing some of the most formulaic, generic crap within the "genre". _________________ http://www.dissectionforum.dk/ |

Dusk is their best definitely. Everything up to Damnation and A Day is moderately enjoyable but I usually only listen to the first 2 or 3 if I'm listening to CoF _________________ Listen to Countess. |

| None. Dani Filth is the worst vocalist in the history of the Universe. |

The first one was ok as a more or less shameless CoF clone. Thats all I've ever heard when it comes to HE. _________________ Thread derailed

| The first CoF album is one of the biggest piles of shit I've ever heard. Cruelty wins for me, because it's catchy, dark, and doesn't suck like 90% of what they recorded does. |

I think so. Actually - and I don't mind admitting this at all - I absolutely adore the first album The Slaughter Of Innocence - A Requiem For The Mighty. While CoF was kind of like this gothic fantasy blend of Iron Maiden and Sabbat (UK), Hecate Enthroned was simply straightforward melodic black metal. There are no heavy metal or thrash touches... but it's all good in a much more simple, dare I say by the numbers way? Others might feel like it's some lush keyboard hell, but if you can stand keyboards in metal you shouldn't have much problems, there's an equal emphasis on riffs.
There's something about it that used to, and still does, enthrall me in a way. Something very sombre. It's very melodic - to the core. I have a soft spot for such things.
Check this shit out (no pun intended)

The second album is still ok, but it does dwell further into the aforementioned keyboard hell. Not bad, once or twice a year. Oh and almost forgot Upon Promeathean Shores, which is certainly a lot of fun. I knew someone who heard The Crimson Thorns once and said "well the first 20 seconds were good!" _________________ §:-«l
