Same question as I just posted in the Dimmu Borgir thread: what Cradle of Filth albums are worth checking out?

Start with the easy ones: The Principle..., Vempire, Dusk and Her Embrace. Further only if you are really into it.

Cheers again!

I would say, as much as I like the rougher debut, the definitive golden era of CoF began with Vempire. Exquisite sound and such great material. Dusk was the embodiment of the entire early days of the band, and is easily an equal in quality.

Cruelty has those neatly intertwined tremolo riffs and tragic beauty about it, with some of the most emotionally charged tracks they ever did, but it does take a bit of might to appreciate the album through the loud vocals and tinny snare. But still, it's one of those albums that have such redeeming qualities the shortcomings simply give way.

I agree completely. As stated before, I regard Cruelty as Cradle's absolute peak material-wise. Anstis was, for all his flaws of character or judgement, leagues above the Allender brothers as a songwriter.

I'd like to hear something like the new album... as it sits recorded before some dude sat at a computer with it polishing down to a blunt nub. A little rawer and rougher and more natural perhaps.

I chose Cruelty and the Beast but I've always really liked Bitter Suites to Succubi. Only listened to these guys from '01 to '03 roughly so Midian was in that mix as well. I think they are a really cool band even though not totally my thing. Dani Filth is an interesting character, pretty awesome vocalist and front man. I pulled up a few newer ones like "Godspeed..." on Youtube and it sounds good to me. But i guess i was never into it enough to discriminate on the different era's. The riffing on Cruelty is just really epic and bad ass. The intro and first track on Bitter Suites has a really dark and massive quality to it.

Has the new song grown on anyone else? The song writing does seem reinvigorated relative to the last few albums...

They really don't seem to want it on Youtube so I've only heard a few tracks. Some bits are ok, but for the most part I can't stand the sterility and cleanliness of the whole thing. It's tupperware.

Yes. Decent album. Again. Nothing perfect or high reaching but still quite enjoyable.

Actually having listened to it proper, more than the song on youtube... I have mentioned elsewhere here the album is actually pretty decent. Production is still high of course, but the material itself seems to be pretty good. I enjoyed the album. Feels like they are trying to care or something.

Honestly gave a good listen to Cruelty and the Beast for the first time today. Not bad, more impressive than Dusk I think. V Empire is the only one that I feel like going back to occasionally. Cradle of Filth was always too scatterbrained for me, and being in my 20's I missed the commotion around the band in the 1990's.

I like a good deal of CoF material.

The only thing that gets annoying is the ridiculously triggered drums, mainly the kick drums.

Dusk and Her Embrace, Midian, and Nymphetamine are probably my most played.

They used to put on cool live shows as well, been a long time since I've seen them though.
