Going to listen to Midian again in a few days. Liked it quite a bit in 2000, but took a five year break from Cradle Of Filth after that. It was extremely well received everywhere and they were even promoting the album and the tour that followed for Finnish television back then.

Yeah, I guess it could be considered their "mainstream breakthrough".

Maybe slightly off topic, but what is you guys' opinion on Anorexia Nervosa from France? Just revisited "Redemption process" (2004) and I still regard that the best Cradle Of Filth album Cradle Of Filth never recorded.

^ Sounds like the perfect loophole for not listening to Cradle of Filth

Not really! I, too, hold "Cruelty..." as an absolute masterpiece and the pinnacle of that genre. (Haven't listened to any other CoF so recently so I can have an informed opinion about them.)

I always avoided them because of the horrible image but later on I heard them and it's actually very good.
Still haven't delved into their discography though.

Never got around to check out Anorexia Nervosa either. Will make sure to give Redemption Process a listen.

It just dawned on me how important a role Stuart Anstis really played in crafting the masterpieces of the band. Listening through every album from Principle to Midian makes the staggering difference between Allender and his writing painstakingly obvious. Don't get me wrong, I love Principle, but the band obviously took a quantum leap after his departure.
