It's been almost six years since Mayhem released Ordo Ad Chao, and the band are currently hard at work on their follow-up. This was not only the return of Atilla, but an album that took the band in an entirely new direction - one that was, not least to the bands own surprise, both praised and embraced by an audience that had been stubbornly ignoring them for more than a decade. So let's evaluate this last testament of the Blasphemer-era before we step into the next. I can't personally say this was "the album I was hoping for" as I honestly couldn't have foreseen it, but to me it sure was more than I could ever have hoped for. A grand return to the esotericism of the DMDS-era, albeit in a different form. Other perspectives?

Is this the album they paid someone to under produce cause they thought maybe they were too polished and wanted to manipulate an older authentic sound but had to fabricate it... wait is this a Metallica thread?

I like the album. The production is weird and hard to get used to, but I like the atmosphere and vocals. I don't think this album will go down as being a "classic" or "a great work of ages," but I enjoy it way more than GDOW or WLA.

Could never get into it, mostly because it's almost like there is zero structure to the songs (and not in a good way).

I expect better from Mayhem.

Its a solid release, but the band really shouldnt call themselves Mayhem anymore. The ideaologies and everything that the band stood for back in the classic line up era is Long gone.

Plus the triggers on the drums are beyond cheesy.

Yay. It's a grower for sure. Sounds very obscure. Hellhammer's kit doesn't sound like shit for once too.

No triggers used 'cept for the kicks for which they sampled the organic sound of his kickdrums. The sound is still a matter of taste though.

Took a while to get into it but it is a great album.....thats the thing with most of my favorite albums.....some of them are instant and some need to be absorbed. They will have a hard time following up without Blasphemer(one of the great losses for Mayhem..but I was skeptical when he joined)....time will tell.

Hint: Works perfect in the dark with headphones. Doesn't work nearly as good on a stereo.

I really wanted to like this, and bought it as soon as it was released. I think there's a lot of great stuff going on, but the sound is so shitty that it's hard to tell...too much work required. Listened to a couple of times, but it's now collecting dust on the shelf. Maybe I'll try it with headphones...
