Surprised to see there was no previous thread. One of the best countries for black metal in my opinion. The more well known bands include Antaeus, Aosoth, Celestia, Mutiilation and the rest of the LLN, Darvulia, Deathspell Omega, Blut aus Nord, Arkhon Infaustus, Seigneur Voland, S.V.E.S.T., Peste Noire, and Kristallnacht. Some others I like are Attralia, Bekhira, Sombre Chemin, Sacrificia Mortuorum, Blessed in Sin, Chemin de Haine, and Desolation Triumphalis. Discuss your favorite bands, some great underground French black metal bands you know of, or even about the ones I've listed.

Total support.

As far as more recent/less obvious bands go, I'm really into Sale Freux, Zepulkr, and Order of the Death's Head.

May edge out Finland for my favorite geographical black metal scene? I don't know. It's a pretty close call.

Ah yes, Sale Freux and Order of the Death's Head. Good call, excellent bands. I'm going to have to check out Zepulkr. And for me as well, between those two countries for my favorite scene, it changes weekly so I'll call it a tie.

It also seems Frenchmen have a knack for having the most over-the-top vocal performances. Really captures the essence of split personalities or mental illness and depravity.

I do like the idea of a regional thread where updates and new releases/obscure finds can be posted in one place. Sometimes skimming thread titles can be deceiving.

Mutiilation is probably my favorite, especially the Rattenkonig album. Total depravity and hopelessness, much more so than any so called DSBM band.

I just listened to the Bekhira LP last night and forgot how damn good it was, as well as Darvulia's L'alliance des venins LP.

I remember liking Finis Gloria Dei's Goat... LP but haven't listened to it in years. Of course there's also Seth, who I find to be underrated. I especially like their Les Blessures de l'âme and The Excellence albums.

The French scene is probably my favorite Black Metal scene. One of my favorites is Haemoth. Terribly underrated.

Majority of these bands are pretty well-renowned and have been covered and discussed in about a thousand other threads on NWN and other forums so it's hardly as if the French scene is under-appreciated.

Anyway can't say I listen to much French black metal these days. However I have been enjoying Darvulia as of late. The split with Sektarism is pretty good stuff.

Yes, Mutiilation, Vlad Tepes, Belketre old recordings are classics. Also worthable french bands: Peste noire old records (démos+1st album), Darvulia, Bael, old Merrimack, Arkhon infaustus, Osculum Infame, Antaeus,, Sorcery "demo 1", Deathspell omega, The eye, Blut aus nord, Seigneur Voland/Blessed in sin/Kristallnacht and more recently Finis gloria dei.

Support for most of those bands, but can't recall any recent French BM releases that grabbed me. I think the scene needs a kick in the pants.

Darvulia along with the classic LLN bands are the best from that country.

However the best record to come out of France will always be the Agressor / Loudblast split LP, especially the Agressor side.
