I'm thinking Profanatica. According to M-A.com, they had several demos in 1990. GBK, Judas Iscariot, Von, Absu, Ceremony . . . they all started a few years after Profanatica.

Who would you say it was? I'm asking because I know someone who joined the board back in '09 and only has like thirteen posts total will come up out of the woodwork and post some crazy shit that dropped, like, contemporaneously with Venom's Black Metal or something, and claim it's the best demo ever, then call me a poseur for having never heard it. Looking forward to that, actually.

I'm guessing it's Von, but not sure though.

You could shift the starting date of Profanatica even further into the 80ies by referencing their kind of predecessor TOTEN which already did some killer Black/Thrash back then.

I've always thought it was Profanatica followed by Von

This whole argument hinges on one's definition of black metal. Some call Possessed black metal. NME was black metal, to me. There were many, many hybrid 80s thrash/death bands that bordered on black metal. Or had black metal elements. One could argue the Deceased demos are black metal as they are totally fucked up sounding (cf. "The Evil Side of Religion"). You could go on and on with this. The mighty Hemlock was another early band beginning c.1992 that everyone always forgets about.

Goatlord demo 1 from 1987 and Paul Ledney would agree with me

I posted this in the "raw death metal" thread as well, but to me, they were always black metal...

Feanturi were the first from NJ. Playing a sound very similar to Mayhem's Deathcrush. First band I'd discovered from NJ playing that sound without as much death metal influence.

One of the guitarists and I tried reforming the band around '99, playing more of a Hellhammer inspired sound.

I always considered that Hellhouse EP from '86 to be one of the earliest examples of USBM. Very noisy but incredibly devastating stuff.

Somebody posted a link for it in another thread.

That was more like noise grindcore IMO.
