The two-finger ambient albums of ILDJARN are the perfect soundtrack for foamy bath on Sunday morning when you suffer a hangover. Just magnificent in their one-dimensional beauty.

PROFANE GRACE's first album "The Divination of Souls" is extremely creepy and simple dark ambient. Very recommended if you're into AGHAST, for example

Edit: Again shameless self-promo and surely not from the 90ies, but anyway.

From 90´s think about Cold Meat Industry, I think CMI was responsible to introduce dark ambient/industrial music into black metal scene in the first place thanks to Mortiis, Penitent and Puissance members were involved in black metal since one point or another.
Anyway my recomendations from 90´s records into dark ambient (or dark ritual ambient) are: raison d´etre, INADE, Endvra, Akhkaru, Tristan.
By the way someone in this list knows something about Tristan from Germany?

As I have previously stated "ambient" is a term that can be used for anything created on keyboards, when put into a Black Metal perspective, including this reply.

Trollmann av Ildtoppberg

This band has pretty much generated a clone band called Aardtmann Op Vuurtopberg.

Both are good though.
