| Bathory is the most obvious one for me. Despite Quorthon's protests that Venom was of no importance to Bathory's lineage it's quite clear that Bathory was Venom-inspired. Still, Bathory eclipses Venom in pretty much every conceivable way sans the locker room level mock-Satanic stupidity. That was Venom's bread & butter. |

Nar Mattaru
I know that some people worship Incantation and Dominus Xul, but I think that Nar Mattaru does it better than either. _________________ If you are a false don't marry! Girlfriend is ok but only destructing anus from behind!!! - Fat Dagon

HELLHAMMER...while not literally making VENOM sound like the BEE GEES, they surpassed everything before (or even after, for that matter) them! _________________ "Slit my eyes, for they'll remember..." |

| Katharsis took all the black magic of old and turned it into the most evil act of all time, and still has not been topped. |

| Probably not a popular opinion, but I think Impaled blows away Necroticism era Carcass (which to me sounds like their primary influence). Especially on Mondo Medicale and The Last Gasp. |

| Cannot forget another obvious case - Slayer. Heavier, faster, harder, meaner and 1000 x more genuinely evil than Venom ever was. |

| This thread doesn't really work, in my opinion. Any band that's hailed as brilliant probably eclipsed its influences to some degree. Otherwise, no one would bother with rock music after the 50s, or no one would listen to metal beyond Black Sabbath, etc. |

Sure it works. When the norm is bad fan fiction it sometimes helps to put things into context. There are a few rare examples to the contrary, rarer yet are bands who surpassed the originals, and this is what I had hoped we could discuss with this thread. any way... |

Danzig > Elvis
Danzig took the voice but instead of singing about whatever the hell it was Elvis did in the 50's, Glenn sang about demonic evil stuff.
Eclipsed.
I win with the best reply to thread. Game over. |

Haha. I really like Nar Mattaru but no way is their album as great as Incantation's first two. They don't even do that style better than their fellow countrymen. I think Godless does the "Incantation clone" sound much better (at least the stuff on their EP) and even they don't come close to early Incantation's greatness.
And yes, I know ''it's all a matter of opinion''. _________________
