First BM song I heard was some track off of the re-recorded version of Stormblast on a Nuclear Blast sampler I found in some punk store back in 2005. Read up on it (Lords of Chaos, of course), and went from there. First real BM album I remember buying was Gorgoroth's UTSoH. _________________

A band from my high school who sounded like a budge imitation of Cradle of Filth. As a result, I wrote off black metal for several years after that. |

Hard to say, can't really see through the time fog but I guess it was Dimmu Borgir's Mourning Palace video on some Finnish TV show, this was time when I was getting into heavy metal and I remember my mother asking if I like this "Dimmu Borgir", which I had no idea about and asked "who is that?" - in my head I thought it was the name of some guitar hero like Yngwie Malmsteen. And I also thought first that Cradle Of Filth is like some clothing brand similar to Alchemy after seeing pages filled with their shirts in some mailorder catalog. I didn't really like it though until few years later, I was more interested in the 80s stuff.
It was also somewhere around these early times that I heard Sarcofago even before I started listening to stuff like Venom, I downloaded the Satanic Lust demo version of Satanas from some website and the drums sounded strange as hell to me even though I liked the song otherwise. For some reason I thought it was "white metal" even though I had no clue what it even meant |

Albums like...
Impaled Nazarene - Suomi Finland Perkele
Dimmu Borgir - Enthrone Darkness Triumphant
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
For what I can remember clearly. Some time around the change of millennium. _________________ Heavy Metal Nuts

I don't have a cool early 90s discovery but whatever.
In 2003 my friend gave me Dimmu Borgir's "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia" during a time when I was listening to a bunch of crappy industrial rock stuff like KMFDM, Rammstein and NIN.
Shortly after that I found "In the Nightside Eclipse" and the rest is history! |

If I remember right, years ago I was reading some stories about the 90s Norwegian black metal scene which I did find quite interesting and I decided to give a listen to some bands. Especially "My Journey to the Stars" by Burzum was a song which eventually got me into black metal and here we are now. |

Back when I was a freshman in high school back in 04, a junior who wore Gorgoroth/Burzum shirts lent me Immortal's Pure Holocaust, Mayhem's De mysteriis dom Sathanas, and a mix of Rotting Christ's stuff. Mayhem and the Rotting Christ stuck with me the most though. _________________

Summer of 1993 - the KERRANG articles about the Varg incident.
Did not become a full fan of BM until 1994....took some time to "hear" what I was reading about back then!
Got into Death Metal in 1990 after hearing OBITUARY. _________________ Too Old, Too Cold |

Gods of War was the first black metal album I heard, couple of days later I was losing it over Fallen Angel of Doom, Casus Luciferi and De Mysteriis. Shortly after, I found myself drowning in Beherit worship. |

As a kid I saw regularly VENOM's "Nightmare" and "Seven gates of hell" videos from SkyChannel and remember that it really freaked me out. But that doesent count, didnt like it cause it sounded nothing like WASP or MÖTLEY CRUE or others that 13 years old kids listened in thosedays.
When getting to extreme metal (Kreator, Sepultura, Slayer, Sodom and death metal from it) years later I listened and dubbed also bands that are known as black metal bands. But in those days we didnt care about genres and never though that "now I listen to death and now black metal". For us it was just metal, extreme and brutal. So I never though that Sodoms or Sepulturas or whatever yearly works were black metal.
It must been just before my army service (in 1994) when really got in to Tol Cormpt Norz Norz Norz & Ugra-Karma and that was really a turning point. After that I only bought black metal and didnt care about other musick for many, many years. _________________ Mors fennico more |

I had a friend in high school that was into black metal. Probably 98-99. He played me Emperor and Borknagar's s/t. I was mostly into thrash and hardcore at the time and wasn't super into it, but a couple years later bought In the Nightside Eclipse and the Century Medis Firestarter compilation at a second hand store and have loved it ever since. |
