Origins of Black Metal (1977-1992)
Timeline: http://www.tiki-toki.com/timeline/entry/79566/Origins-of-Black-Metal
Full disclosure: Most of my favorite metal albums came out in the 80s/90s, but I started listening to metal when I was 12, around 2000. So unlike many of you, I haven’t lived through the formation of death metal, black metal, etc. As a result I have read a lot of bogus revisionist histories about the formation of this or that genre. (“Yah man, black metal is evil shit. It started in Norway where the bands kill people and burn churches and paint their faces like Kiss.”)
Over time I’ve developed a general understanding of metal history, but I still find myself getting jumbled in details (“wait…did In the Sign of Evil come out before or after Morbid Tales?”). So I put together this timeline to give myself a better visual guide for black metal.
So check it out and let me know how wrong I am.
Some acknowledgments
-I tried to be thorough.
-I could use more exact dates.
-I mostly used metal archives for info, so some things might be completely wrong.
-Not every band is exactly a black metal band (Slayer), don’t get your panties in a bunch.
-Yes, I think this software is intended for high school projects on the Industrial Revolution
-I'm still tinkering with this and will likely add more content |

At quick glance, seems correct... and damn, M.Fate's Don't Break The Oath came out in Sept '84 , and not the summer like I have been thinking lately.
Yeah, it was in September, as I was wearing a jean jacket when I bought it, it was getting too cold to just wear a t-shirt. |

Thats pretty cool... I have done similar thing on paper in past. I noticed some minor mistakes here and there and some essential stuff is missing... especially when the line between black and death metal was very thin in early to mid 80s. Other than that great job and keep it updated. Just looked this site quicly and here are some remarks:
Where is Mantas and early Death? This major fail
Death SS first recordings are from 1977 already.
Onslaught started as punk band and changed into black/thrash ca 1985. _________________ TRADELIST:

I was having a bigger debate about including Morbid Angel, mostly Altars. But I guess I have Sepultura on there, there isn't much of excuse not to have Death. |

| Holy shit, that's awesome. Every time someone asks me about metal (and it happens a fair bit for a whole variety of reasons), I am just going to link to your timeline. |

Sure Morbid Angel is a MUST! Think of "Abominations Of Desolation" and also other early stuff. And so is Mantas / Death.
I mean you have included stuff like Schizo (Italy) and Morbid Saint but not two mentioned acts. But I understand this timeline not complete at the moment anyway. _________________ TRADELIST:

| Nice effort, but Death SS were never Black Metal IMHO. |

| Many of bands in the timeline weren't as well; in this case I think it's better to throw in any band that could have been influential. |
