For example Moonblood, Absurd, Truppensturm, Heldentum, Luror, Wolfsmond, Morrigan and Mayhemic Truth are much better, in my point of view.
(+ the aforementioned bands except Drautran) |
Winterblut released some good stuff and then there are (were) Naglfar, Genocide, Tha Norr, Paria & Old...
of course Katharsis & Truppensturm are great too, especially Katharsis have released a pretty consistent oevre. The German scene nevertheless sucks compared to other european countries.

Ah yes, not the Swedish band, I have a hangover...
The Graupel/Endstille split is great. Compared to countries like France the German scene looks bad I think. Half of those Bands mentioned are associated with Nag e lfar anyhow.

Germany was and is still the biggest market when it comes to Heavy Metal: A lot of fans with the right amount of cash to keep things going, but also of course a lot of wannabes that think it's a good idea to contribute to the pile of crappy bands. So no surprise a lot of shit - but also a lot of good - bands emerge from the iron heart of Europe.
It's simple mathematics and some basics of economy. |

This might still be true for sing-along power metal bands but when it comes to extreme metal the last good band Germany produced was Morgoth. As for modern bm, the Krauts just don't have it in their chords, it's either 5th rate useless norsecore (Katharsis, Nargaroth and those other bands mentioned so far) or hilariously bad black/thrash abortions (early Desaster, Nocturnal). And yeah I'm aware of Ungod, they have one good song in a 20+ year career.
I'm a sucker for old German metal and Sodom is possibly my fave band ever in the speed/thrash department but everything has come out of Germany in the last 20 years is nothing but plain rubbish.
