|
|
Okay, so here are results from 289 surveys (below). (Of the EUR and USD entries I converted them to GBP at an exchanged rate of 0.86p/£ and 0.64p/£ respectively).
Max spends are without postage included.
Average spend per month on physical music: £87.06
Average spend per month on MP3s: £1.15
Max spend on 12" LP: £17.69
Max spend on 12" DLP: £23.88
Max spend on CD: £13.45
Max spend on cassette: £6.53
Of the above, 40 people do not buy vinyl, 16 do not buy CD and 55 don't buy cassette. Further, 248 people do not buy MP3 files (no surprise there). 9 people also do not buy physical music.
Of the above, 123 prefer vinyl, 143 prefer CD and 15 prefer cassette.
The link below is a plot of all 289 results for the max spends. The circle represents 95% (therefore those outside are the 5% - the anomalies. The anomalies were counted in to calculate the averages, though).

The average max spend on CDs was the most consistent by far and average spend on cassette was the least consistent. However, because I did not omit zero values from the statistical analysis it skewed the results. I did not have time to manually remove each zero entry.
ORIGINAL POST (please fill out survey if you haven't already, by the way).
I am investigating spending habits of consumers for a business aspect of my university course and have therefore made a survey on Google to collect results. It is solely related to musical purchases (vinyl, CD, cassette, etc) and should not take more than 3-5 minutes.
My study is focussed solely on the underground metal scene as that is my choice of pursuit.
I would really appreciate it if some of you guys here could spend some time filling the survey out. Link is below:

| That was probably me. You should change the final question about merch (shirts/hoodies/patches etc) to allow for more than one selection. |

Just a few observations to help you out:
1) You'll need a good average (yearly/monthly) rate for currency fluctuations (not everyone uses GBP)
2) Your questions related to how much you would spend on a single vinyl release or double vinyl release aren't restricted enough. Are you only talking about a new release?
3) Post or pre-tax income?

Whats the benefits to filling this out? A tax break or anything? ...a postage coupon for 10% off next postal charge?
I don't understand the questions. |

I'll edit the survey now, thanks for the feedback. Opinions on how the survey is now shaped are appreciated.
I will post results when I've had this survey up for a good week or so. I currently have 34 feedback forms completed.
EDIT:
Average spend, from quick assessment, currently seems to be at around 40-70 EUR per month. There are some extremities on the higher end of the scale and one or two extremities on the lower end of the scale.
Only three people out of a now 37 filled forms purchase MP3s. |

Only the poor people are filling out the survey, the people with cash have other things to do, like searching all the distro's and buying up the albums. |

It seems that the big spenders are in the US from the responses so far ($400, $500, a couple over $100). Though that might be because this board is used by many US users and time zones may mean that US users are online more than other users in other locations.
I'm looking to get a couple hundred completed forms so I can get a better idea of averages. It might be useful information too, on the whole, for pricing strategies etc. Or at least an indicator. |
