Whether you like that album for what it is isn't the point here, it sounds little or nothing like old MF, except for the two-three moments I mentioned. It's a modern heavy metal album with a few decents songs, miles away from the class of the early releases.

I could the say the same about "In the Shadows".

Both albums have their charm and I would never sell them, but I think "Time" is the more compact one. "In the Shadows" is more on the progressive side.

Matter of taste, blablabla...

It's not a matter of taste, In The Shadows is just far closer to the MF sound than Time, listen to that instrumental track written by Denner and compare it to Nightmare Be Thy Name or The Mad Arab, the difference is clear enough.

I think the difference is the overall sound of the albums. In the Shadows has a fuller, for lack of a better word, production or quality to it that doesn't really come back until maybe Dead Again. The quality of the recordings on Time are definitely a little more thin but that gives them some charm for me.

As far as album pacing goes, 8 minutes of the Old Oak right at the beginning of that album really kills it for me. A Gruesome Time might be the best post-reunion Fate song.

On Time the songs are simpler, and less structure; In a sense, that is a departure from classic MF song writing I suppose but the atmosphere on that record makes up for it.

Into the Unknown follows a similar format of Time in that the song writing is more simplified, but the overall sound is better.

Dead Again is a little bit of a return to an older MF aesthetic I think, and really an enjoyable album for me.

Finally, 9 is a heavier version of modern MF. Really a departure from the Dead Again sound, maybe more of an extension of the Into the Unknown sound.

So basically, I could agree that In the Shadows is closer to an older MF; that being said, Time has more appeal for me. Lady In Black, Nightmare be Thy Name, the Afterlife, Angel of Light are all great MF tracks.

I'm sure In the Shadows sounding the closest to the first couple albums has nothing to do with it's chronological placement in the discography. Laughing

It hasn't in fact. It has something to do with four fifths of the original line up being involved and with Denner/Shermann still being able to write good riffs, which in the end is where Time and the other albums fall short.

Definitely. That one song is one of the most splendid moments ever caught on tape, in Heavy metal and in music in general. The songwriting is awesome, the flowing is great and the musicianship is superb. If there ever was the perfect song, this is the one.

Yes, hands down my favorite Mercyful Fate moment. Absolutely brilliant, evil riffs.

I have a hard time choosing between Melissa and Oath as well. I find myself playing the tracks "At the Sound of the Demon Bell" and "Black Funeral" the most... so I guess I'd have to go with Melissa.

Impossible to choose between the first two albums, but I went with "Don't break the Oath" merely because I think I have played it more and it has a bit more cohesion than "Melissa".
Fantastic albums from an untouchable band either way.

s/t, DBTO, Melissa > Return of The Vampire > In The Shadows/Time > everything else

Everything they've done is good though! To this day I'd take the weakest Fate or King album over 95% of the crap being released nowdays!
