I'm looking to start ripping the cassettes I own. I have a USB preamp with RCA connectors for it (I've ripped vinyl before). However, I don't own a cassette deck.

I'm concerned with the quality I'll get with what I use to rip the audio. Is it better to get an older deck with RCA connectors or a newer deck with a USB connector? I'm wary about the digital cassette decks, since digital record players tend to produce lower-quality audio.

Also, any specific model recommendations for cassette decks are welcome!

These are the best decks I have ever owned and I highly recommend them. I haven't used them for ripping yet, but I do direct recording and listening on them and the sound quality is excellent. They're in the medium price range I'd say. You can get one for about $150 shipped if you play your cards right on eBay. I managed to get very lucky and snagged the pair for about $190 shipped

I use a Pioneer CT-W770 with a RCA -> 1/8" stereo converter cord directly into the line-in on my soundcard.

I get great results.

The Tascam decks are great, but their a bit pricy if all you need them for is ripping.

Agreed, line-in via 1/8 inch stereo plug works great. Cheap as hell if you already own a deck!

The Tascam one sounds great, but it's a bit out of my price range. I went ahead and bought a Pioneer CT-W770. I'm looking forward to using it!

Key is not to use ant "cleaning" effects. It may take away the tape hiss but will add digital noise which sounds much worse.
