Guilty as charged. A big difference between "inspiration" and what this clown has been doing.

Great article.

Does anyone have a link to that website with all the artworks that get appropriated for metal covers....Caspar David Freidreich, Beksinski etc?

You can use an image as reference but it must be something different in the end.
Sometimes I need to "copy" a part of a photo, a painting or a drawing especially to draw horses !

For example for the ROOT Dema box I used a photo of a guy on his camel !

For AG Heavenly Vulva cover, I used this painting as reference:

This is not even like ripping off a riff, this would be like taking a chunk of the actual recording and pasting it into a "new" song consisting of a bunch of riffs taken from somewhere else with some effects added on top of them.

Yes of course.
In these cases it's 100% rip off :

A little bit more to the story, including more pictures and other artists' comments.

Funny how actual artists find this to be pathetic and straight up plagiarism. But of course the NWN knowitalls think this is perfectly fine and that "everyone does it!"

Still think this isn't pure theft?

To whom here are you referring? The general consensus in this thread is clearly the other way round.

I do the same thing as Moyen, I almost always use reference when I draw, and if it doesn't exist I collage pieces together. But using something as reference and using a piece of a finished painting as a part of your finished painting is ridiculous. By looking at some of his stuff I can't believe people didn't catch on sooner.

And yes the Bathory goat is ripped off, does that mean no one should give a shit that this guy is doing it as a career?

Reference has been used since centuries ago, but those dudes didn't grab some painting, doodled a bit over it and cashed in on it.
Until some years ago, you didn't have a chance but to actually do the work yourself over the reference so even if you were tracing or whatever you had to bring something of your own because it was your hand doing the work. Now it's not even that, just look at all those shitty Marvel comics full of slightly retouched photographs. Makes you want to buy some Rob Liefeld shit.
