Bought a record on eBay for not much money and ended up having to pay 156kr (ca €20) just to get it out. Never happened to me before and it's really pissed me off. Anyone know what this is? Is it new? Don't feel right giving tbe seller shit for it but it just raised tbe price a lot on this for me.

Did they mark the LP as a "Gift" with a fake low value? If not... sorry. _________________ You can dispose of your guitar, Show No Mercy has been already been written. |

The thing wasn't even worth $15
Yes it was marked as gift. The post here said its a charge from the US customs. That's put an end to any purchases outside Europe for me _________________

Is that the problem? Not marking it as a gift? |
Yep, that's the problem. Mark all the parcels as a gift. Make sure your seller knows that beforehand. _________________

had the same problem here in germany, package was marked as a gift but no value, also had to pay taxes, but first they wanted me to prove me the value of the package. I sent them a paypal invoice and they accepted it. |

Marking packages as a gift does not mean you won't have to pay a fee/tax to get it. Don't ask me why, that's just the way it is. _________________

The post office said it was totally random which considering all the stuff I've ordered from the US over the years is probably true. I'm just pissed that intended up paying almost $75 for a copy of Morbid tales between the postage, customs and the price. Fucks sake. Customs was more than the record. _________________

Yeah that has never happened to anyone I ever shipped to in any country.
Basically I just mark everything as a gift and I never enter a value over $10 for anything unless somebody actually wants insurance. _________________

Never happened when ordering records, got to pay $25 once when I bought two collectible action figures from overseas. It's mostly done random here, they'll open like one package in a hundred and decide by themselves whether the goods are valuable or not. _________________ Thread derailed

There is a legal precedent for this, man.
Did you pay $15 only for the item?
I do not know if it's too late if you already paid, but I would go with a receipt back there and say that it was under the legal limit, the guy just forgot to put the value.
Just look up the limit in Sweden. These days it seems about 20EUR everywhere. _________________ motW/Lykathea Aflame/Sigh/Whourkr/Manii/Thy Catafalque available

| Postage counts as well, so considering it came from the US, postage alone nearly makes it a case for the customs office. |

| It doesn't seem likely that the US charged you a customs fee to export a $20 record. If anything, your country charged you the fee to import the record. You probably just got bad information from your PO. |

I've ha very few problems with this. It sreems like the luck of the draw. If the customs agent decides to charge you some arbitrary amount, you';re fukked. The fee does NOT go to US customs, it goes to the customs dept. in the country it was shipped to.
Recently I shipped a large personal trade to Germany, which I've done many, many times. This time the customs douhebag refused to accept that it was a gift/trade, so I ended up having to make a fake invoice pretending I had charged the guy money before they'd let him claim the package! _________________

This. US customs has no financial stake in whatever value is claimed on a parcel sent to another country. |
