Never heard of Timescape Zero, will look them up. Profound Effect would fit that list.

Timescape Zero were good. Kind of like Florida's take on Integrity. Dark hardcore with LaVey-ish satanist philosophy, at a time when youth crew / posi / crew subject matter was the overwhelming default. This is splitting hairs, but it's worth pointing out some of this stuff is getting away from the punk part of hardcore punk, really more just straight-up hardcore. Almost totally different scenes through a lot of the 90s and 2000s. Frankly I've been glad to see the punk influence come back in recent years. Anyway, this was all covered in another thread here, but other straight-up HC stuff with a dark metallic vibe along the lines of Integrity and Timescape Zero worth checking out are Ringworm (still active), Ascension, and Florida's hopelessly overlooked Scrog, who brought in great Swans / Christian Death influences at a time when those bands were totally ignored.

For me, "dark hardcore" will always be Bl'ast!, first Die Kreuzen, and CoC crossover phase as the closest thing, speaking about dark vibe in music.

Man, that first Die Kreuzen LP is so fucking good. Pure alienation, paranoia and hatred.

Jerry's Kids and Negative Approach for me. Never got into hardcore much beyond them and Black Flag

+1

And I love how close they sound to Voivod (or the opposite way ...).

Yeah, personally I think the first Die Kreuzen LP is probably the pinnacle of classic American hardcore punk. I like everything the band did, but that thing is a total face-melter and my appreciation for it has only grown in the last 30+ years. Missed them twice around the time of October File (a great album in its own right, though not really HC anymore at that point, of course) due to typical teenage dramas and incarcerations but did get to see them on the Cement tour and they were still blistering as fuck.

I suppose any best-of or favorites list I came up with would be typical of someone who grew up going to shows in the 80s / is a giant nerd when it comes to underground music and a former record collector pretentious asshole. Poison Idea, Die Kreuzen, Negative Approach, Black Flag (probably my all time favorite overall band alongside The Smiths and the Cocteau Twins), Big Boys, Minutemen, Naked Raygun, GISM, Meat Men, Government Issue, early Dead Kennedys, Lip Cream, Bad Brains, Gauze, Effigies, early Discharge, Rattus, 1st Adolescents LP, 1st Suicidal, Void, early Angry Samoans, Gudon, Terveet Kadet, Zero Boys, Verbal Assault, The Stalin, 1st MDC, early Circle Jerks, early 7 Seconds (I guess "early" is a given for pretty much all these bands, though I admit to liking later stuff by Raygun, GI, etc.). The first Cro-Mags album and demos are untouchable. First Agnostic Front 7" and LP are great. Always had a soft spot for the melodic DC stuff like Gray Matter, the 1st Dag Nasty, Rites of Spring, and Marginal Man. A friend who moved to Florida from Massachusetts in high school hipped me to the early Boston scene and the Boston Not LA album and all the bands like FUs, Jerry's Kids, early Gang Green, Proletariat, SSDecontrol etc. were a very big deal to 1983 me (I guess 2015 me too).

Couple greats I didn't see mentioned:

Tennessee's Koro, classic fast & angry 80s American HC:

Canada's Neos:

Nip Drivers:

Abandoned (like a slightly more metal version of early Adolescents):

Dr. Know (early stuff was Discharge-y dark HC punk, later on they got a bit crossoverish and signed to Metal Blade / Death, everything crushes):
