Being somewhat obsessed with Dissection I always caught myself using them as a bench mark for every other Swede BM band and then letting the results disappoint me. In revisiting "Opus Nocturne" in the past couple of months however I realized this is probably my favorite album from Sweden not named "The Somberlain". Granted the sound might be a bit dated by today's production standards the entire LP reflects the spirit of the very best metal from the 90s and pretty much lays waste to every flavor of BM in 2013. Marduk was always hit or miss for me, but they scored a knock out blow with this melodic albeit unrelenting album.

I like this one as much as "Dark Endless" and "Those of The Unlight". It was the beginning of Marduk´s obsession with speed, but it was also the end of Jocke Grave's era (he will always be the definitive Marduk's vocalist).

The production doesn't bothers me much, in fact in this it adds to the charm of this record. Few months ago i listened for the first time to the Unisound's version of "Secrets of The Black Arts" and it has the same kind of sound as this album. Pretty killer if you ask me.

The very first 3 MARDUK albums are really classical for me but still I do not despise the "speed obssessed" later albums and have somehow ignored their post-Legion era.

This, together with (in my opinion highly underrated) "Nightwing" are the strongest Marduk-releases. There is some truly unique atmosphere in both of them.

For me this is their best album, everything released afterwards I'm not so keen on. Af Gravf's vocals are killer, he was definitely the best they had.

Really great production all around, warm sound on this one. Solid vocals and riffs. Their best effort. I'm glad Osmose is repressing this. Or did I miss it already?

The rerecording of Dark Endless during this studio session is orgasmic.
