In town for 2 months, would love to do some good record shopping. I know of Academy in Williamsburg & I just found out about Heaven Street through facebook. but other than that i'm fairly ignorant of any other places. Mostly looking to buy punk/metal/experimental on vinyl. If there's already a thread covering this let me know

thanks!

This has been covered a bunch of times including recently. If you have access to a car, drive to Vintage Vinyl in Fords, NJ across the border. it is, by far, the best metal record store on the east coast.

Vintage Vinyl is a fantastic record store but the best on the East Coast? That might be pushing it, haha. Armageddon Record Shop in Providence is pretty fucking good, too!

Have you been to Baltimore in the past year? VV is a great, but Black Mess blows it out of the water for UG stuff.

Come to Baltimore, shop at Black Mess, tell your friends.

I find it hard to believe any store blows VV out of the water. I guess a roadtrip is in order!

Heaven Street is great, especially for Industrial/NeoFolk stuff. I've scored quite a few good used records there of the Metal and Hardcore variety as well. The owner is a class act. I'd love to check out Vintage Vinyl some day.

Does this place have mostly new records, or do they have a sizable used section of old LPs too?

Mostly new, but they have some used stuff.

God Slayer, as for Black Mess being better than VV in terms of UG stuff, I stand by that statement. BM isn't going to have the basics like In the Nightside Eclipse or A Blaze In the Northern Sky. Their logic behind that decision is that you can get that stuff anywhere and they'd rather use the space they have to stock things you wouldn't otherwise find in brick and mortar shops. I thought this was pretty strange when they first opened. What about casual fans and walk-in business? But by now I've had so many "buy or die" moments there that I totally understand the strategy. Take that roadtrip and see what I'm talking about.

Yeah, somebody should make this a 'sticky' topic, seems to come up every couple months "what to do in NYC".

I don't doubt it's a great store, but VV is absolutely full of UG stuff. Hell, I was able to buy Fullmoon's UAE from their "featured release" rack a few years ago.
