Have you ever got record which literally smells really bad? Just asking because I got Arkha Sva/DTL split 7" few years ago and it smells like decay and mold. Its pain in the ass because the moldy stench has spread in some other records so basically I had to quarantine it in other place, under several plastic sleeves but it still smells. Crying or Very sad

Now i am starting to lose my temper, cant listen to that piece shit either because all the tape and plastic around it. I've been thinking to try wash it with vinegar but haven't tried yet. Any tips for this?

For some reason all records I got in the past from South America (Brazil especially) used to smell pretty bad. I guess living in third world countries next to rats and trash may affect the condition of your records, also smoking in the place where you store your lps isn't a bright idea.

I doubt there's much one can do about it. Try spraying it with

Find someone who owns a record vacuum. A damn expensive piece of equipment, but it's by far the best (and safest) way to get a record clean.

Moldy, old smell I can deal with, but that disgusting tobacco smoke-infested stench is intolerable.

You could always let the sleeve sit outside for a couple of days, should clear up the stench.

This may sound ridiculous, but it worked for some vintage comic books I got. And I wouldn't tell you to purposely fuck up your vinyl, so it's serious.

I took a Hefty garbage bag and put about a dozen charcoal brisques in it, then knot it closed, trapping the air inside. The charcoal eventually absorbs the smell and does wonders, but the kicker is you have to let it sit for at least a good month to six weeks. I know this sound stupid, but it is proven for paper stock, and it worked on 11 comics worth a few hundred bucks each. The coals sit at the bottom of the bag and the album can sit at the stop so no coals can touch the album at any time. It's a pain in the ass and time-cosuming, but it does work. As long as they bag is out of the way and unable to be bumped or anything, it should really work.

Instead of charcoal you could try powdered coffee or baking powder too.
Works for paper and should not harm the record itself. I would try it!

heard something like that but with unperfumed cat litter, which absorbes not only mold but also the stench.

My Iron Maiden - Seventh Son... lp smells like a combination of Limburger cheese, farts and beer burps.

my LP's always smell old and evil...
seriously though heavy smoking will leave some residue forever, next to the yellowed sleeves etc. as does mould from wet walls.

Record jackets are made of paper.
Anywhere with a humid climate would possibly allow the jackets to grow mildly moldy over time, thus smelling.

Of course filthy mongrels will also have filthy records. ...and thanks to ebay someone will buy them for top dollar Laughing

Actually it is Woods of Infinity split, not DTL. Old Ugly Trees... could be intentional.

Charcoal and such seems worth to try.
