It can't hurt, but it takes some time. Good luck with it. Keep us posted.

Be real careful with mold. That shit is insidious and highly transferable. Living the Pacific Northwest in a badly ventilated apartment for a time, I learned the hard way. Many CD booklets/tray cards were destroyed because they were in cardboard boxes and mold seeped in from an outside-facing corner in my closet.

Point being, proper ventilation is essential. I got a killer moisture absorber called DampRid (any hardware store should have it) that hangs anywhere you can fit a clothes hanger, and you can see how much water is in the air with it.

Also, if you're in a pinch, mold-killing bathroom cleaner and a slightly damp sponge will get rid of mold spores. Just leave whatever you're cleaning out to dry.

With the whole absorbant materials like charcoal and cat litter in trash bags, will this help in mold situations? i have a crate of records i found on the side of the road, mostly hard rock but some metal albums (grim reaper, judas priest, iron maiden, etc) that the discs are unplayable due to mold. Wondering if i can salvage them before i throw them out, and to help clean the box they were in to store current records.

I have tried to put books that smell old and evil in the friezer sometimes, works nice for getting rid of the smell.

I don't think you want to be putting vinyl in the freezer. Wink

Moldy, old smell I can deal with, but that disgusting tobacco smoke-infested stench is intolerable.

You could always let the sleeve sit outside for a couple of days, should clear up the stench.

A long time ago I bought Incantation - Onward To Golgotha CD and it smelled like it had been sitting under an ash tray for years! And guess what? I liked that...

nothing could even come close to the stench of the second Antichrist (Swe) demo... have to keep the cassette in a separate box and the case/sleeve is triple bagged and taped up airtight.
