I don't think we've ever had an appreciation thread for this amazing band so here we go. Pretty underrated lot, their stuff is in the same league as early At The Gates, Dissection, Unanimated etc in my book. Also it might be the only band I can think of whose comeback album is actually the strongest in their discography, "Counting our Scars" is a splendid record. I like post-death groovy shit so I enjoy Swallow the Snake too, although it's obviously their weakest one.

Tough call between Into Eternity and Bitterness, but I will choose the latter due to it being more atmospheric and I like the mid-paced songs on that album. Counting Our Scars is definitely one of the better death metal comebacks as far as I'm concerned as well. Swallow the Snake is pure garbage.

Looks as if this band is as popular now as they were back then.

Worthless trend hopping band

1. play typical melodic Swedish Death Metal
2. switch styles and play rockin' "Death Metal"
3. Make a come back album playing "OSDM"

I usually agree with you but this time I think you're a bit too hard on things. As you know it was common for dm bands to wimp out in the mid-'90ies, see Massacra, Cancer, Entombed, Morgoth, Unleashed, to a certain extent Obituary as well and I'm certainly forgetting a dozen more. Desultory was no exception but at least they managed to come up with something truly killer once they decided to play metal again. I'm not sure the same can said for those other "betrayers" of death metal I mentioned.

I am going to vote for Swallow the snake. Enough shitty album for this shitty band to deserve it. Still having a copy of Into Eternity somewhere. That one was at least decent in comparing with the silly, melodic and compromised stuff on Bitterness that escalated in the hilarious 3rd album.

^ Shitty band? You may not like them but "shitty"? Bitterness "silly"? I seriously wonder what some people here are smoking or shooting.

Satanic Warmaster --> retarded band, shitty rip off grade-z music, zero talent --> 6 pages of wankery

Desultory --> amazing band, genre-defining music, plenty of talent --> 10 people caring

Voted for Forever gone. it's the most death metal... "Into Eternity" has a weak guitar sound. If that was fixed during the recording, I think it would hold up better.

"Bitterness" is good, but I just don't like that style.

Never heard the 3rd album, maybe it's time. ha...

I don't know where have you been or what music was accessible to you back in the day but calling anything by Desultory genre defining is an absolute nonsense.
To keep up the level of absurdity, let me say Satanic Warmaster is better than Bathory. Rolling Eyes

Forever Gone dates back to 1991 and is one of the first attempts ever in the later-to-be-called melodeath style. Into Eternity came two years later, when At The Gates were still miles away from the more accessible sound of Terminal/Slaughter and The Somberlain hadn't been released yet, while Unanimated's first album was still a more or less traditional death metal output. Along with Dark Tranquillity they were among the first bands to experiment that particular sound, so it's certainly not wrong to say they contributed to define the style.
