|

Reading a shit load of threads about the hidden gems of whatever has inspired me to create one for the opposite. A thread dedicated to the "bigger" albums that had a broad impact back in the 90's. Some of them are still held in high regard, while others are almost forgotten. So this one is for the albums that got top ratings in the magazines, the ones that helped create the trends of the day.
First couple that came to my mind:
At The Gates - Slaughter of The Soul
Cradle of Filth - Dusk & Her Embrace
Dimmu Borgir - Enthroned Darkness Triumphant
Dissection - Storm of The Light's Bane
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Tiamat - Wildhoney |

From this list, three are amazing albums, two are really good, one is mediocre- but I don't think any are forgotten by any stretch of the imagination. |

THERE is your forgotten album. Really, does anyone listen to Machine Head these days? There should be a thread for these sort of bands. All of us have a friend or two who listened to this shit, Nothingface, later Pitchshifter (as opposed to Pitch Shifter, which ruled), etc etc. The only band who survived from that era seems to be Fear Factory. |

More:
Biohazard - Urban Discipline
Carcass - Heartwork
Entombed - Wolverine Blues
Morbid Angel - Covenant & Domination
Fear Factory - Demanufacture

Burn My Eyes is still a classic record, regardless of whatever shite Machine Head put out after it. |

There is nothing classic about it, other than what inspiring shit loads of awful nu metal bands? Most of In Flames latter material was overhyped and now look where it landed them, Rotting Christ's gothic material is arguably a label creation of Century Media and can be considered hyped in that regard. _________________

Remember this thread ain't about what's good or bad. Just what was popular/hyped/sold a lot.
Speaking of Century Media:
Samael - Ceremony of Opposites & Passage |

I hate to agree with NK7, but you are symptomatic of the idiot Americans who have been into metal for 1-2 years and plague this board with moronic opinions. |

The "gothic metal" Rotting Christ albums are some of the biggest piles of terrible commercial shit ever released. I hated them at the time, hate them now. It seems like a lot of people aren't even aware that Rotting Christ weren't taken seriously for the majority of the late-90s/early-00s, because they started out strong and then regained composure later on. My fiancee, for example, is a big fan of Rotting Christ, but she's never heard A Dead Poem or Sleep of the Angels. Lucky girl. |

In Flames started out as a promising act and were respected in the UG in their early days.
Well, a lot of hyped shit back then, from regular Power Metal bands like Morgana Lafey and Iced Earth to the already mentioned "Neo-Thrash" crap à la Machine Head, Fear Factory etc. plus of course the "True Metal" revival of Hammerfall et al.
Sepultura was also constantly hyped since Arise at least.
Shitty Death Metal like Gorefest, Morgoth and Pyogenesis also deserves a mention. |

Great thread idea.
Sepultura - Chaos AD
Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding
Deicide - Once Upon the Cross / Serpents of the Light
Immortal - At the Heart of Winter
Enslaved - Eld / Blodhemn
Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk / IX Equilibrium
Satyricon - Nemesis Divina
Ministry - Psalm 69 (way hyped and far more metal than industrial)
Soilent Green - Sewn Mouth Secrets
Pretty much anything Relapse advertised on the back cover of Terrorizer back when they could afford that real estate.
I chose ATHOW for Immortal not because of its influence, but because of the hype surrounding it when it was released. The Emperor and Enslaved choices before the slashes are the influential records that were on everyone's CD racks and the ones after the slashes are the albums that were hugely anticipated and hyped before they were released.
Looking at this list, I doubt many of us here would cite these records as the best by many of these bands. But these were all huge back when they were current. |
