can't see the forest for the trees, literally...

In many cultures forest is primitive, eternal, full of spirits and in there human can notice how small and worthless he really is before the nature. So for me forest is more black metal than sunglasses and sunny cemetaries.

But the sensitive are always with us, and sometimes a curious streak of fancy invades an obscure corner of the very hardest head; so that no amount of rationalisation, reform, or Freudian analysis can quite annul the thrill of the chimney-corner whisper or the lonely wood.

[...]

In the West, where the mystical Teuton had come down from his black boreal forests and the Celt remembered strange sacrifices in Druidic groves, it assumed a terrible intensity and convincing seriousness of atmosphere which doubled the force of its half-told, half-hinted horrors.

[...]

Wherever the mystic Northern blood was strongest, the atmosphere of the popular tales became most intense; for in the Latin races there is a touch of basic rationality which denies to even their strangest superstitions many of the overtones of glamour so characteristic of our own forest-born and ice-fostered whisperings.

HPL, 1927.

It can be hard to understand for someone who lives in a new world country with no history. I live in northwestern Canada in a region with a "white history" of less than 100 years. It's basically one big forest, but mild, benevolent with no ghosts of ancestors or past wars. Not grim or black in any way. Oldest thing you'll ever find is a tobacco tin. This is probably why "cascadian metal" exists, because if you live here and you write lyrics about grim and haunted forests, you are just making a hollow imitation.

Ehhh, I live in NZ - pretty short history in terms of whities, but some pretty fucking 'haunted' places here. Might be a cultural thing in terms of Maori relations with landscape, but it is definitely just as significant as European 'haunted' forests. Some pretty fucked up stuff happened in those trees.

I would imagine would be the same in Canada/US - those places have been inhabited for a good long time.

But still yes, white immigrants playing black metal music about those topics is different than indigenous white metal musicians.
