Is the band name pronounced "Mare", as in nightmare or as in a horse, or "Ma-re" broken up into two syllables? Several people at the show were pronouncing it "Ma-re", but I had always assumed it was just "Mare".

"Ma-re" is the Norwegian pronounciation. A-sound as in "hard", E-sound as in "air".

I think that's what he means by "Mare" as in nightmare. People were saying it "Ma-Rey" at the show though. Pretty sure the norwegians were saying Mare as in nightmare.

Mare is a creature from norse mythology. And the creature gives people bad dreams.

It may well be they pronounced it the english/american way at the show, it's a word that works in both languages.

"Mare" is derived from "Mareritt" which translates driectly to yes, nightmare.

But "Ma-re" is the Norwegian pronounciation. Everyone I've ever encountered here referring to the band has used this pronounciation.

Probably still sobering up.

But...

Phonetic English spelling is meə(r).
Just say Nightmare without 'night'.

That would be closer to the Norwegian phonetics, yes, the way we say it. I would not react if people outside Norway said it in english, though.

From an old mLP thread.

For once the simpler pronunciation wins!

I'm pretty sure no one "wins" here. He's basically saying that you can pronounce it any way you want, while they pronounce it the Norwegian way.
