Agreed. The guy asked for grindcore and people just start listing any old shit, regardless of it being grindcore or not. Always happens with this kind of thread, waste of time.

Saw Captain Cleanoff and Inhume yesterday at Chimpyfest in London. Both come highly recommended!

Hmm. So what you're saying is it might need an "influences" section where we list old HxC and proto-DM bands?

Repulsion sounds to me like what happens when you cross DRI with Motorhead.

I agree (w/cochino) that it's not wise to list these bands directly as grindcore, because they aren't, but much like we'd have to mention NWOBHM on the way to speed metal, it's kind of vital to mention grindcore's influences.

On that note... are there any good histories of grindcore anywhere?

I'm caught not knowing too much about this subgenre. I always saw it as parallel to thrash (DRI, Cryptic Slaughter), among the honor metal/punk crossovers. Cryptic Slaughter's Convicted is about 80% of the way to grindcore, if you ask me.

But I listened to metric fucktons of Repulsion and Carcass back in the day.

Short Fast & Loud zine did a great history of grindcore. Will be sorting out my wordly belongings in a couple of weeks, so will scan it if I find it.

I haven't read it for ages, but Choosing Death would probably serve as a history of grindcore. The SFL history really digs far deeper though.

Siege definitely need a mention as far as influences on grind go. I guess maybe bands like Protest Bengt, Larm, the Neos....

If Scum is the first 'proper' grind album then you could argue Discharge and Hellhammer are also where the roots of the genre lie e.g. minimalist approach to riffs.

I can understand all of you in this.

theese are old grindcore bands at least:

Sexorcist, Dead Infection, Haemorrhage (Spain), Rot (Brazil)
Agathocles, Fear Of God, Exit 13, of course ND, Repulsion,Carcass and maybe Sore Throat if they are not too left winged for a tolerant metalhead Wink

Definitely crust was one of the largest influences. Crust + thrash (Cryptic Slaughter) basically equals grind.

Phyllomedusa,

Frog themed goregrind/gorenoise project. Insane ammount of albums for free to download, a nice break from the photos of dead people in album art and samples of people in movies dying, bands named after unpronounceable diseases, or even worse, porno shit that is so common in the genre.
