Perhaps because Incantation is one of those bands that require more than one spin to "get". The beauty of their songs emerges from the composition and how the whole thing works together. In a way the opposite of "catchy", but catchy in it's own twisted way.

I always considered them to be a big and influential band. Maybe its because I grew up on their early records, but I never thought they weren't considered highly influential, even if their popularity went up and down. I think part of their troubles were with the Relapse/Visceral/Repulse kablooey and the inability to hold onto a permanent vocalist. Craig Pillard was a tough person to replace and they lost a bunch of listeners on the records immediately following Diabolical Conquest when Danny didn't stay on either.

Also, they weren't an "NYDM" band.

I remember thinking that Onward to Golgotha was the heaviest thing I had ever heard in high school.

INCANTATION draw more people at a show in NYC in 2013 than they did in 1993...thus putting your theory down the toilet in my neck of the woods.
Also, they are more respected in the last 3-5 yrs than they ever were.

I remember seeing them several times in the early 2000's in front of about 20-30 people... nowadays that would never happen. Again.. I think it does have to do with them not playing as often as they did back then, so when they do play it is more special.

+1

in the 90ies the got lesser credit, but today everyone's aware of them.

Nocturnus suffered a lot more from less credit, though they were 1st who placed keybords in DM and many musicians wear their T-Shirts in the nineties..

I've only been into them since 2000 or so, but I remember then having a decent following and a lot of praise. Shit, I saw them play to maybe 20 people in Cleveland in 2010, and that was right around when Inclonetation bands were getting huge... So I'm not so sure they were lacking praise 10, 20 years ago and are getting it in spades now.

Uh.... no way.

We played a ton of them on the show from 1992ish through 1998 and no one ever complained. In fact, I think a listener urged me to score it in the first place.

The East Coast bands got less focus than others because:

(1) Uneven output/member problems

(2) Bad attitudes (cough... NY)

(3) Lack of availability outside NY

The band that really got no credit was Immolation, although we played a fuckton of them as well.

I think Immolation is too "weird" and unorthodox for a lot of people. Their loss.

Also, because their style was farthest from what people knew. Slayer-type bands (Morbid Angel) and speed metal-type bands (Malevolent Creation, Deicide, Suffocation) got accepted faster.

definitely,

I also remember back in the late 90s, doing a radio show and announcing the upcoming live shows: "Hey, everybody Incantation is coming back along with Exhumed, Nile, etc..." Audience Response: "Awww, not again... Rolling Eyes anyone else better coming? " Laughing

Ive seen Incantation a couple times since 1999. Every show had a lot of people at it... granted they were opening, but still... I have multiple vhs tapes of them playing raging shows in mexico and florida and whatever... almost anyone I know who likes death metal has an Incantation shirt.

Just be thankful they didn't do what Morbid Angel/Entombed/Carcass/Deicide/Napalm Death/etc did.

The album that got me into Incantation was Diabolical Conquest, but it did took me a few spins to really get into Incantation before. Especially their first two albums.

I'm really glad Incantation is one of those bands that rarely puts out a bad album and I hope it stays that way.

Incantation is kinda boring. They are pretty much a b or c tier death metal band, riding on the coattails of suffocation and morbid angel.

Pity Morbid Angel only have one good album though.
