The Chameleons - Script Of The Bridge is probably the best post punk album of all time. Not goth or death-rock by any means, but a phenomenal album from start to finish.

Great album. I only have this album by The Chameleons though...what are their other albums like? Not as good..?

Some good songs on the other albums, especially on 'What Does Anything Mean Anyway...' but not as consistent at 'Script...'. They went a little too upbeat after that.

all 3 albums are ESSENTIAL . Not Goth (which has already been stated), but absolutely incredible band. Also, for all you Chameleons fans, check out another Manchester band called Puressence

AUTUMN

http://www.discogs.com/artist/Autumn+%285%29

Killer 90s US goth rock band. Has it been mentioned?
Haunting female singer, ice cold atmosphere.

Their highlight, the track "Seconds" is DEADLY, really deadly

THE CANDLES BURNING BLUE

Over the top pure Finnish Goth Rock from late 90s/early 00's ala The Cure/Christian Death.
Perfect sound for the genre, a true unknown GEM!
Cult act that was kinda kept secret or something...

You guys. Check 'em out if you dont know.
You guys
C'mon

NEVA

Last but not least, another unknown gem.
Hysterical punkish French batcave by the leader of LTNO (les ttines noires) Jacquy Bitch.

Smells of cocaine-filled 80s underground goth parties.
Damp smoke and sweat filled cold wave caves

Cheesy yet deadly.

This is the shit you guys, this is the shit:

http://youtu.be/LaQmmymRicY

It's a pure unaltered 80s fix that can never be reproduced.
This track is magnificient: Heroin+Despair+Gay Romanticism

heh, I remember not being able to stomach Two Witches even at the height of my interest in this sort of stuff. I'll have to have a look on youtube and see if it's as bad as I remember.

Shooting suggestions:

Sisters of Mercy - Floodland
Bauhaus - The sky's gone out
Nefilim - Zoon

Zoon is totally underrated. Great concept, performance and songwriting. The vinyl version well worth getting. McCoy goes for more of an industrial metal approach- weird but it works. That was pretty much the last decent record he did.

As for the other 2, the word "inconsistent" comes to mind.
I want to like that Bauhaus record more but it's got too many dumb moments on it, so the dark atmosphere gets somewhat diluted.

Nice that it's a French chap who makes you discover an American band.
But it's "one of those bands" completely forgotten and lost in time. So unfair because they were truly brilliant.
Other songs are more woeful and sometimes mushy but "Seconds" has a unique WICKEDNESS about it which is outstanding
