Rank the following 15 bands for their importance to the development of black metal! #1 = most important. All of these bands were hugely influential, but I thought it might be interesting to see who is regarded as the most important influence. If you like, you can justify your choices. I have only included bands from 70s and 80s

Black Sabbath
Motorhead
Venom
Hellhammer
Celtic Frost
Mercyful Fate
Slayer
Bathory
Sarcofago
Mayhem
Root
Possessed
Obscurity (Swe)
Sodom
Morbid Angel

My list

15 - Obscurity - Seem to have been an influence on important people in Norway.
14 - Root - An influence on early second w
13 - Motorhead (inspired Venom and some of the imagery of black metal)
12 - Possessed - (fast and occult thrash with influential dress and aesthetics)
11 - Black Sabbath - The song Black Sabbath set the vibe
10 - Slayer (Occult lyrics and far more sinister, evil and raw than the rest of the big four)
9- Mercyful Fate (proto corpse paint and occult themed lyrics)
8 - Sodom - very similar to venom. influential aesthetics.
7 - Sarcofago - Raw, Brazilian sound.
6 - Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness united the death and black metal underground. Occult themes.
5 - Venom - Arguably the first black metal band and utterly influential on everything that came after, even if they were not as 'serious' as some of the other bands on this list.
4 - Hellhammer - Rawer version of Celtic Frost. Hard to say which was more important.
3 - Celtic Forst - Slower, evil riffs. So inspirational on black metal bands like Darkthrone.
2 - Mayhem - Almost impossible to decide the top two on this list. However, I think it wasn't until the 90s that Mayhem really defined what black metal was, and as this list is 70s and 80s stuff I shall give the top spot to...
1 - Bathory - Made Venom 'serious.' So influential on all second wave black metal. Probably the first 'sincere' black metal band.

Did I miss anyone?

I almost included: Sepultura (Sarcofago all that is needed?), Kreator & Destruction (Sodom seems a more direct influence), Paul Ledney projects (slightly into this 90s but very important for USM), Blasphemy (were these guys influential in the 80s before their first full length?)

No. Fukk you. There is no point in discussing which band was the most influental and true and the first and blahblahblah.

Why do threads like this keep happening again and again.

well beats the last thread similar to this where bands being listed were Watain, Cultes Des Ghoules, MGLA, Mare, etc. Not to say all these bands are bad but talk about "Black Metal 2013" Rolling Eyes

I actually find topics regarding This subject pretty interesting sometimes.
But to rank influence is just crazy.
