All image signatures suck. Glad I have adblock at work too.

Agreed on both counts. I've been allowing image signatures that identify the user's metal band/label/etc. but deleting all others. I'm thinking of banning them altogether, with the exception of Yosuke's. It's his label and forum, so he's the only one who really deserves a billboard here. I'm also probably going to stop allowing avatars from being linked from other sites. This allows people to bypass the 100x100 pixel size limit and results in abnormally large avatars that fuck up page formatting and become annoying. Maybe I'll do that but allow slightly larger avatars (150x150) to be uploaded to the forum.

Werewolf, please re-size the image and use it as your avatar instead. It's too big.

Good idea, 150 x 150 is more than enough.

Well, they don't get damaged just from being grabbed the wrong way. Or from being put on a shelf the wrong way. Or from being dropped down a couple of feet (at worst, you can always disassemble a shattered cartridge and transfer the tape into another one).

As for being chewed up, that's an issue of shitty equipment or shoddy cassettes of thirdworldian origins, not the medium itself. It's not like cds don't occasionally shatter while spinning in the player (admittingly, it applies more to software cds, with their x48 and higher speeds), or vinyls are never scratched by the needle.

Cd players themselves will put scratches on the disc unfortunately, and there's really no way of knowing it is happening until it's too late.

Not the case here. Even taking the most care of CDs, one doesnt know that the player is a Cd eater until a scratch or two comes up.

Huh? My hate for MCs stems from teenage memories of hard-earned albums getting chewed up in tape decks, walkmans, car stereos etc.

This was my attitude for years too. Resurrected my deck this year after trading a zine for a tape and have enjoyed it since, mainly due to the fact that I can get a wide range of more experimental/ violent releases that don't have to guarantee reasonable sales to have them released on vinyl. The trend for tapes as an emblem of UG kvltness is fucking pathetic, however. Irrespective, hail Silver Key!

What's with the backlash against tapes anyway? Find something more useful to spend your time complaining about, or better yet, shut your mouth and stop complaining altogether.

This.

Tapes are great, more so if you don't own a shit tape deck which chews them up (compare the same situation with a shit vinyl stylus).
If you have to explain tapes and justify them to someone, chances are that they haven't been collecting music for very long and, feeling left out from this, choose to be contentious about it instead.

My personal collection at home has a healthy selection of all three formats, and I couldn't be more pleased by that.

Sometimes it's nice to just throw five cd's into te carousal and let them play end to end while performing other activities... sometimes it's nice to actually just sit and be immersed in an album with the LP jacket on ones lap drinking a beer and taking in the entire artwork (music and visuals etc etc)
Sometimes there is a nostalgic desire to hear a new band the old demo way to have a moment of youth back again and remember how things used to be, the tapes are great for that.

Out of the three tapes are the format I buy the least of, but I still enjoy the little bastards. Wink

They called them "Compact Cassette" when they were introduced because there was another "portable" cassette like format before 8 track (but similar in size to the 8 track) from the 60s or so. It totally flopped for whatever reason. Remember that the cassette was a compromise between affordability, portability and sound quality as compared to reel-to-reel. I guess that cassette that never was didnt get that balance correct.

There's a very small handful of things that I prefer to hear on a tape. Otherwise I care less and less about them as time goes on.

I like demos to be released on tape format. Mostly for aesthetic reasons than anything else. I just like the fact that bands have to put some effort into making their demo tape instead of burning CDRs with pixely covers. Of course most demos these days look like ass so my reasoning is flawed to some extent. I guess I should qualify my original statement by saying that I like good demos to be on tape format.
