There are two albums that really stand out to me when it comes to that description. Ive listened to both countless times and just love the atmosphere conveyed on each. Im talking about Asunder's Clarion Call and Anhedonist's The Drear demo. While the bands may differ in style, I still think that these two albums are the heaviest pieces of depression maybe ever.

What other bands play this way and could perhaps top them? Please no long lists of every obscure band you know. Quality over quantity.

Warning - Watching from a Distance. More "depressive" and crushing than any DSBM shit I ever heard.

Doom (and slower paced) metal in general has always been more exhausting than depressive to me. I'm not saying it's boring, more like it makes me feel like I've been dragging Sisyphean boulders up a fucking hill all day while vultures rip my innards out (yeah I'm mixing tales but...so what). Depressive? Melancholic Polish and French BM riffs bring out the depression much better for me. The first full track on Gontyna Kry "Welowie" for example. Fucking depressive perfection.

And DSBM is just funny.

i think the sound in general is incredibly heavy and crushing. the deep vocals are a boost to that. if you like Warning, check out 40 Watt Sun - The Inside Room. same degree of depression, longing, honesty from the same voice. probably along with Pallbearer some of the best clean depressive doom vocals

I am a bit of a sucker for good "DSBM," although I generally hate that "scene" like most.

Abyssic Hate-Suicidal Emotions
Wither-s/t
Worship-all
Thergothon-all
Mournful Congregation-all
Warning-Watching from a Distance
40 Watt Sun-debut
Solitude Aeturnus-Into the Depths of Sorrow has some pretty crushing moments (especially "Mirror of Sorrow")
Strid-End of Life
Weakling-Dead as Dreams

as for non metal, I will say Swans-The Great Annihilator has a very similar emotional effect as the above mentioned metal albums.

I guess if you're into this sort of thing, then you're already intimately familiar with My Dying Bride. Funny this thread popped up, I've been listening to nothing but MDB all week.

Surprised I haven't seen Skepticism mention in the first 5 or so posts.
