I hate to clutter up NWN with a rec thread, but you guys just have better taste than the unwashed masses on many other boards.

Black metal is a bit of a stumbling block for me. I like some bands but they tend to be more unusual ones - bands like Hail, Mortuary Drape, and Varathron are my favorites. They have deeper vocals, some influence from traditional heavy metal, and basically sound nothing like Norwegian 2nd wave.

So I'm trying to find some things that skirt around the edges of Mayhem/Emperor/etc. Here's what I'm looking for: 1. more thrash beats than blast beats; 2. more twisted riffing than boring, repetitive tremelo picking; 3. somewhat deeper or at least unusual vocals - try as I might, I can't get into that high pitched raspy style that is so prevalent. One band I do like that fits most of this is Tormentor, who I think are GREAT. I'd like more stuff kind of like that. Or like the Mayhem track "Buried By Time and Dust" which I think is far and away the most enjoyable thing on "De Mysteriis." If it comes close to Sarcofago that's cool too.

Finally, I'd prefer something from back in the day. I'm pretty familiar with all the modern black/thrash bands, who are fine and all, but not quite what I'm after.

How about Messiah hymn to abramelin? They're more evil than most of the current black metal crap.

I would also recommend Grand Belial's Key "mocking the philanthropist"

If you like Hail, then get the 2nd Faustcoven CD that got released on Barbarian Wrath some weeks ago.

Also highly recommendable is AN's debut CD. Mix of Death and Black Metal, some killer atmosphere, insane leads, ...

Argentum's debut. Read Drowned's review on that CD on Metal Archives and you may want to get that asap.

You can't go wrong with:
SAMAEL(first 3), ALASTIS(The Just Law), BELIAL, MASTER'S HAMMER, SIGH(Scorn defeat) etc.

And hell yes, bands like:
MESSIAH, SACRIFICE, SLAUGHTER, POISON, INFERNAL MAJESTY etc were more dark and evil than most BM bands could ever be

Second vote for Argentum's frist album. That needs to be pressed on vinyl...

Also their demos are good. I got lucky and found them at a store in Chicago owned by Fernando Castel of Sempiternal.

Coincidentally I just ordered that Argentum album a few days ago. I'm really intrigued by what I've heard of it - hope it's as good as the samples I heard from it.

I love Messiah, awesome band.

I'll check out some of these other ones - thanks guys.

Couldn't agree more ...

The song "Longing for the ancient kingdom" is one of the evilest song I've ever heard!

Yeah - I'm listening to them right now and I agree, the dum sound is way too mechanical (and it's mixed too loud, too). I'm not crazy about the processed vocals either.

If you like either of those, you might also like the Megiddo stuff on the same label. You can find samples at the Barbarian Wrath homepage:
http://www.barbarianwrath.org

While you're there, check out Barathrum and Amon Goeth as well -- very atypical, bass-and-riff-heavy stuff with deep and unusual vocals.

Holy Death, Taranis, and Xantotol are good. Check out Anael if you haven't, Necromantic Rituals is especially early Samael-laden.

Different than Blood Ritual with a massive, deathly production.
Sadly that's their last great album in my book
