The two new box sets for Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning made me go back and re-listen to 80's Metallica for the first time in a decade. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. Those first four records still blow my mind on so many levels, but the one thing that really got to me was the riffing. Sure Slayer had faster songs, but they never matched the monolithic heaviness of Hetfield's picking. Metallica were in league of their own in this regard.

So what I am looking for are bands, preferably from the 80's or 90's, that have a similar style of riffing. Go!

I am not sure about Razor, but Sepultura's Inner Self fits the bill.

Got your point.Metallica's monolithic heaviness (especially RTL and MOP) is unique and very difficult imitated.

For that super heavy, thick ,sharp and true metal sound with the monstrous rythmical riffs ,for me Black Sabbath and Frost/Hellhammer are the best (and actually are the best bands ever).
The slowest the better.Anyways....
Some records I listened recently and were in the same vein (riffs riffs and again riffs)

Paradox - Heresy
Necrophagia - Holocausto de La morte
Usurper -Threshold.... (listen to ''Slavehammer'' and remember me)
Eyehategod first (heavy as hell with those super heavy thick riffs and rotten sound.Black metal feeling...)
Coffins - Buried Death ( real death metal got no blastbeats suckers....)
Asphyx - discography
Obituary - SWR
Protector - Shredding of Skin + The Heritage

Lair of the Minotaur - Carnage (strictly only this!)

Generally harsh heavy riffing goes with old doom ,80s death/thrash (Slaughter,Sacrifice etc) ,Brazilian death/thrash ,Australian black/death scene ....Means the best things in metal!!!

Outside some of the more classic answers, Ravens Creed - Albion Thunder straight up takes the cake for heaviest/manliest/most aggressive w/e thrash/dm record, for me. Ben Ward's vocals take all that to the next level too

^ The fucking riff / lyrics in this makes me want to fuck someone up everytime I hear it

THE HILL THAT I CLIMB IS LITTERED WITH SKULLS OF DESCIPLES
THE ROPE THAT I TWINE IS MADE FROM THE SINEW OF COWARDS
THE SWEAT ON MY BACK ARE TEARS FROM A WEAKENED AGGRESSOR
THE COURAGE HE LACKS IS SYMBOLIC OF A BASTARD

neither 90s or really thrash but early Mastodon does the Metallica crunch better than most.

For monolithic heaviness, there's not that many thrash bands that did that exclusively, most bands were trying to be complex, fast or syncophated and used the epic and powerful chugging and powerchord approach on a token song here and there.

I think Exhorder - Slaughter in the Vatican has a certain heaviness and muscular riffs, Devastation has muscular riffs but they are more churning and syncopated than Metallica, Napalm Death's Harmony Corruption has a monolithic sound, I think it might be worthwhile checking out Heathen's Victims of Deception as it has a strong Metallica influence and is quite a nice album.
