You know from the period when all those fantastic bands changed their style and released their last good or acceptable albums, like:

Hypocrisy - Slippin Away (Abducted)
Amorphis - Shining (Tuonela)
Paradise Lost - Embers Fire (Icon) partly true as they kept releasing good albums despite of the style changes

What else? I am sure there are many, just cant remember as I heard most of this songs/albums circa 10-15 years ago last time.

Tiamat - Whatever that hurts

I mean Wildhoney is great record but would be only shadow of it without that song

Maybe check out Nuclear Blasts Beauty in Darkness Sampler, some kind of Best of in that Genre.

Drained (sums up how the band felt after this LP I think ha) from the same Hypocrisy LP is also gorgeous. Remember listening to this years ago on a blazing summer's day for hours on end on loop with Slippin' Away.

Remembered that Therion's - Theli had few good songs that would fit in this category. So had to check it from Spotify

My god how wrong I was...

Good call on that, totally forgot this serie ever existed, but exactly the era I am thinking of. Unfortunately there are many irrevelent bands on it, so rather post personal faves.

All the way. Many other possible picks from that album.

The second album from Gandalf (fin) "Rock Hell" had some serious hooks too, unfortunately the screechy vocal was the pits. It's usually awkward vocals and/or production that cancels out the "top hit" potential. Swano was at times good enough to overcome both.

I don't really get into gothy stuff at all but that Moonspell song "Opium" probably qualifies on topic. And I'm surprised The Gathering (LP3 and maybe 4) hasn't been mentioned right away. "Sand and Mercury" is up there with the Sentenced stuff in terms of songcraft, and probably surpasses most other things in this thread in terms of production.

Theli is a fantastic album but no melodic death metal.
Previous Therion albums was kinda death metal.

I found that self-titled Hypocrisy album from 1999 the other day for 50 cents at a flee market and FUCK ME is that song "Elastic Inverted Visions" one sweet one. The part that begins at ca 3:05 is so impossibly brilliant I want to beat down a lamppost any time I hear it.
