The “stoner” genre isn’t really something I’ve dug too deep into, but for me Sleep always stood out amongst all the others. The perfect blend of Sabbath worship with their own unique twist has really given them a sound of their own. Even that last single The Clairty they put out a few years ago was top notch, although I highly doubt we’ll ever hear another song quite like Dopesmoker in this lifetime.. but who knows.

Dopesmoker by quite a stretch. Not to detract from the greatness of Holy Mountain, but Dopesmoker literally feels like a pilgrimage through a burning desert. Hypnotic and CRUSHING. The riff that kicks in at around 5:28 (Dopesmoker not Jerusalem) is one of my fav ever. Monumental. The drumming is incredible and ritualistic.

Not to mention the lyrics, as humorous as they may be: ‘Lungsman unearth the creed of Hashishian’ is inspired given the context of the song.

‘FOLLOW THE SMOOOOOKE TOOO THE RIFF FIIILLLLLED LAAAAND’

Holy Mountain is their best work for sure but both Volume One and Dopesmoker are legendary as well!!!

I went with holy mountain however it's a flawed record the fact the production quality seems to vary throughout the record.

Vol. 1. Saw them live quite a few times between the time this album was released and Holy Mountain. Imagine songs from the 2nd album but with the crustiness of the first album....

Holy Mountain easily, no matter how stoned I am I still get bored with Dopesmoker halfway through.

Dopesmoker is more nostalgic for me so I voted that one. Although I think nowadays I'd rather listen to Holy Mountain.

Obviously, to each his own. But whereas Jerusalem/Dopesmoker is a funny Melvins' Lysol performance on weed instead of heroin, Holy Mountain never did it for me. Such a boring and innocuous album. Volume One/Asbestosdeath features some of their most nightmarish stuff, so I'd go for that one.

Anyway, I'm much more into High On Fire's trilogy. Coke over smoke.
