How downtuned does it have to be? I mean, Slayer was tuned half a note below E and D sounds tight as well.
But I guess you're looking for the lower end.

It seems like downtuning became popular at the same time production techniques started going for the clean sound we all love to hate.
So finding good old fashioned sounding speed metal with lower tuning seems quite the quest to me.

Kreator uses D tuning as well I think. But below that it's probably too sloppy.

Well, like already mentioned; thicker strings can eliminate this. Just think of Slaughter of the soul.
But offcourse that's not speed metal...

What's the tuning on Slaughter of the Soul? Dropped C?

Could be, dropped I don't know. Maybe it's even B.

Co-written with Paul Speckmann in 1985 & recorded in 1987. The Deathstrike version was called "Live for free", but it's basically the same song with different lyrics. Tuned to C#

I love the sound of playing old speedmetal/thrash EP's on halfspeed, but whenever I hear bands playing detuned thrash it loses all the violence and force. I think Slayer tuned to E flat and it sounded good, but lower than that usually sucks. Thicker strings end up sounding like dribbling a big bouncey ball when it ought to sound like a violent a whipping. Halfspeed thrash sounds like simultaneous flogging and drowning.

yeah, nice band, huge old CF influence but quite unique as more on the crossover side to me.

F.U.C.T. were interesting band, huge CoC crossover phase influence and going really heavy with it - http://youtu.be/v17lfBPqkVU
