as much as i love vinyl, i just can't get enough cassettes. they're just so much fun to collect, small and compact, easy to take care of, and convenient. plus the artwork for new underground bands' tapes is usually really cool. the only real downside to them is that most people don't seem to have tape players anymore.

my favorite format to collect, though, is definitely 8-tracks. the sound on them is so shitty and they look cool, too. sabbath 8-tracks are always awesome to pick up. i wish raw black metal bands would start issuing stuff on 8-track, that'd be awesome.

now somebody one-up me and say that they only collect reel-to-reel and exclusively watch movies on laserdiscs... Wink

Ah, the words of a collector. I too find myself with that problem.

Vinyls have the most "collector's value" for me, but I most prefer to have things on CD.

I collect CDs. Anything I can't get on CD, then I'll get on whatever format I can find, although I do enjoy cassettes.

For vinyl I prefer 7" records to collect. And I do love tapes ! I have over 1500 tapes I think ! Long time since I counted them.

Though CDs obviously have their own value, I do really love tapes and vinyl. Tapes have a really cool DIY feel to them which I can't get enough of! Vinyl meanwhile has the cool gigantic artwork which really looks like someone has put effort into it... at least for the most part. Of course there have been crap LP covers but when they're good, in my opinion they're REALLY good!

I do have more CDs than anything but as much as anything I'm sure that has something to do with my generation more than anything.

12 Inch lp's for me. I have a habit of having cd's all over cd's and cd'r's all over my floor which is why i don't buy cd's anymore.

It's really all about packaging for me. Usually I prefer LPs, but not matter what, if the packaging is killer then it's on. Thats why NWN! I think appeals to so many collectors is because every release has tons of shit that comes along with it. Not only are you sitting in front of turntable listening to the new record, but you're on your couch looking through the 50 pg. booklet and carefully examining all the other stuff thats inside.

I really like any format just about. i have more cds than anything but thats just cause i have been buying cds for a longer time period than tapes or vinyl. i love tapes though like someone else said it has more of a DIY/old school feeling to it that i like plus its usually a cheaper way to check out some bands if you cant find much info about them. only downside is tapes wear out faster, and vinyl of course is killer for the packaging and artwork etc

CD's have the convenience aspect.
Records have the expanded artwork, and the actual feeling that when you spent $20 you actually got something.

Tapes are done for me. Rewind. Fast forward. Small artwork. The only good aspect is durability I guess.

Ultimately if it were all to be about just showing off and impressing, vinyls are the key. They are impressive.

When it comes to what matters it is just listening, and in that case every format is acceptable.
All I know is that I require music.
