I'd probably have to say 'Serenades' and 'The Silent Enigma' by Anathema here, thought these are for sentimental reasons haha.

I like the lyrics to Amorphis' 'Tales From the Thousand Lakes' a lot too, though having said that the band didn't actually write them.

some were mentioned already like

funeral mist (in general)
pagan altar ("the masquerade" in particular)

i would like to add

the coffinshakers - s/t (coz i really like this kind of sinister humour)
church of misery - any album (these guys put a hell lotta effort into the lyrics -the research- obviously)
samael - total consecration (all their lyrics are great though)
griftegård - psalm bok
trist - tiefenrausch (the band is not the same without kölling's poems)

Yeah the Coffinshakers are exceptional.

For yobbo hellraising lyrics, you can't go past the first Gehennah album - 'Piss off I'm Drinking' and 'Say Hello To Mr. Fist'. It may not be poetry, but these lyrics rule he he

I can think of quite a few albums that had a major impact on me, some of these even challenged my young mind when I was a teenager and just being introduced to concepts such as nihilism, existentialism, etc. Some of these albums were really influential in inspiring me to dwelve further into the realm of epistemology and thus were key aspects of the development of my idealogy today. The others simply stand as paradigms for what I consider 'Metal' to be all about.

EXCITER - Violence and Force
MANOWAR - Into Glory Ride, Hail to England
MERCYFUL FATE - Don't Break the Oath
CANDLEMASS - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
BATHORY - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
SAMAEL - Blood Ritual, Ceremony of Opposites
SAINT VITUS - Born Too Late
MORTEM - The Devil Speaks in Tongues
MAYHEM - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
DISSECTION - Storm of the Light's Bane
MORBID ANGEL - Blessed are the Sick
ENTOMBED - Left Hand Path
ORDER FROM CHAOS - All
THE CHASM - All
IMMOLATION - Failures for Gods, Close to a World Below
Various works from MOTORHEAD albums

Order From Chaos, Ares Kingdom, Vulpecula, Deathspell Omega, and Katharsis immediately spring to mind.

Alot of Hetfield's stuff on 'Lightning', 'Puppets' and 'Justice'. Angelripper's take on Marquis De Sade in songs like 'Sodomy and Lust', 'Incest' and the like - Killer shit. Alan from Primordial's stuff, and some of KK D'666's stuff, particularly 'Tyranny' - "A man of the cloth came to pray for me...." - Brilliant stuff.
